A Modern Indian’s Struggle With Arranged Marriage

This Indian writer has a very funny and informative piece on her parents desire to see her married and she chronicles her difficulties with this age old tradition that is now confronting her.

The writer is a Jain, a sect of Hinduism that adhere to a strict vegetarian diet. However, as she says….”My father excludes “non-veg” suitors. There is, however, a loophole for meat-eaters who earn over $200,000″. (ain’t nothing going on but the rent, honey) .

Anyway, even though she talks about it from an Indian perspective, the desire of her parents to see her married to someone who meets their prescriptions of a “suitable husband” can be applied to almost any culture. Her father’s idea of the “perfect” husband is totally opposite from her ideal. However, she also mentions that her brother, who never dated anyone prior to his arranged marriage, seems to be very happy with his new wife and daughter.

This concept of arranged marriages is both fascinating and confusing to me. Think of all your ex’s.  Now imagine if anyone of them were imposed on you!! That could truly turn out to be a nightmare.
