Breaking News….MP For Embakasi Shot Dead….

A guy by the name of Mugabe Were. I’d never heard of him before (had you?). Dandora is part of his constituency and they’re now saying it’s also a stronghold of the Mungiki sect, but Embakasi has a lot of dangerous neighborhoods (Kayole, Mukuru kwa Njenga, Kariobangi)

Mugabe Were beat David Mwenje in the December elections.

David Mwenje himself has admitted to bankrolling the Mungiki and using them to “intimidate” his so called political enemies (Davied “Mungiki” Mwenje).

I highly doubt this was planned by higher ups in the government. They are more interested in the planners of the violence in the Rift Valley.

Those MP’s from Eastlands are downright thuggish (don’t run against them unless you have very good security around you). This one can be attributed to Mwenje’s personal thuggery.

Your thoughts on this developing story…

** Just heard Ruto being interviewed on the BBC. The reporter asked him at least 5 times if he was involved in the violence because {and this a direct quote} …“your name keeps coming up time and time again. You were even mentioned in the Human Rights Report”. Folks, he’s getting nervous. This thing he started is now spiraling out of control…..

Mungiki got the wrong man.

  1. ….just sad….sad….sad…..sad, no one should part with his life just because of his political affiliation, tribe or religion.

****on Ruto, i do not even have words for him or whoever is funding the skirmishes. At the end of the day, the politicians will form another alliance and we Kenyans we will be left in the dark. We are all Kenyans, regardless of what Kibaki, Raila or Ruto might be eying for, its so sad that an innocent man like Were was caught up in the mix…RIP WERE

  2. That is scary. If the violence is slowly creeping into Nairobi, that is extremely scary. Should Nairobi become caught up in the violence….then what?

This story of Were is truly suspicious. What was he doing out alone at 1am in the night with the fragile situation in Kenya? Can he spare some 30k form his huge salary to pay a bodyguard?I think these young Legislators are too naive for crying out loud ……..or the money is too much they cant think….Abuna Mwamba(whatever the spelling) the MP for Bundalang’i…….Its a big lesson for you.Kindly learnt from it!!!!!It doesnt cost much to be respectful esp to the incumbents who have been thro so so much in the same parliament.Nothing can be ruled ont from thuggery,to political revenge,to Business Rivarly….and the list is endless. If you remember clearly Were was linked to the Petrol bombs that were intercepted somewhere some weeks ago.I dont think he is completely blameless for the skirmishes. All in all i think the government is doing very little to control the situation.I thought that the Government had a machinery that should be able to deal with this. What the hell is the Army doing in the barrcks? They should send enough ecurity detail to the affected areas. What do they mean that they are overwhelmed? For Maina Kiai i think that guy is confused and completely out of issues and ideas.Human rights issues only crop up when the police retariate to safeguard the lives and property of innocent Kenyans, but when the goons and holigans burn innocent children and women in a church, there is no cause for alarm for human Rights violation? Is the Human rights Commission a watchdog against the police or a watchdog of all human(Kenyans) rights? How come he does not talk about the same when the rioters lynch a police officer.I think his Firing is long overdue…………
    God Help Kenya!!!!!!

  4. if nairobi erupts then you will be caught up in the violence and will think differently about your stance on the political scene. I personally feel ODM and PNU cannot run the country without the other. And even if one did it would not be a country worth living in. Think of what solution would satisfy both sides and not about who you want to be sitting on the top seat. Think as a Kenyan. if there is such a thing anymore.

I think this way. Raila should let kibaki still hold onto power for a while. Maybe two even three years. Would that satisfy PNU? The election issue has to be resolved. People need to believe in thier institutions. A re-election is a must. Take a look at nairobi today, hawkers taking over the streets, corruption going back to its old days. why be honest when your own president is not? Forget what you want, Kibaki will not step down and ODM will make sure he has no country to govern.

tHE GUNS THEY ASKED FOR IN A KISUMU FUNERAL HAVE KILLED THEIR OWN. tHESE ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF FOOLISH TALK, SIMPLY BECAUSE YOU THOUGHT YOUR OWN SONS WONT DIE. MORE POLITICIANS NEED TO DIE JUST LIKE ORDINARY KENYANS HAVE DIED, FOR THEM TO FEEL WHAT IT MEANS TO LOOSE A HUSBAND OR A WIFE OR A SON. ONLY THEN WILL THEY PREACH PEACE. THEY CALLED THE PEOPLE THAT DIED FREEDOM FIGHTERS AND CELEBRATED THEIR DEATHS AS IF THEY DIDNT MATTER. THEY FUND THE ARMIES AND SAID THAT THE KISIIS SHOULD NOT BE KILLED BECAUSE THEY ARE THEIR OWN. SO OTHERS SHOULD BE KILLED BECAUSE THEY ARA NOT THEIR OWN? THERE ARE MANY MANY BITTER KENYANS, AND THOUGH THERE MAY BE SILENCE, THERE ARE MANY MORE TO DIE, THE BITTERNESS IN PEOPLES HEARTS IS TOO MUCH, AND IN A COUNTRY WHERE HIT SQUADS ARE FOR HIRE, THE ONE WITH THE MONEY WILL BRING MANY DOWN. ESPECIALLY IF YOU WERE SEEN / KNOWN TO BURN A HOUSE, OCCUPY SOMEBODYS PROPERTY SIMPLY BECAUSE YOU THOUGHT THE POLITICAL SCENE FAVORED YOU. ITS NOT YET UHURU FOR THEM WITH COLONIAL MINDS.

Holy Crap! THE UNPLEASANTRIES CONTINUE!

We’ve finally completed our swift descent to the bottom of the abyss as I’ve always feared. KENYA, AS WE ALL KNEW IT, has been gone for a while now and this is just another nail in the coffin. Mr. Were [never heard of him] may turn out to be the first in a string of targets on both sides of the divide. All MPs should invest in some quality security whether they took part in the December sleazefest or not. It’s called the art of revenge [as was expected] and I STILL DON’T CONDONE IT but we have to call a spade, a spade. It’s open season on politicians, it seems. Can this free-fall into anarchy and chaos be contained? I bet it can be if Kibaki wills it.

KE, I don’t know where you or your people are located relative to this fracas but as kenocratic said, you’d probably change your tune if ‘they’ with their rocks, tayas, pangas and mkukis were to show up at your front yard or those of your people.

Dead man [Ruto] walking, KE? I think you meant dead men and women walking, and the score is now one to nil [1-0] and counting, as far as elected and both party members on both sides are concerned. By now Ruto, KE’s preferred dead man walking, should know that he’s in the cross-hairs and should probably self-exile to some obscure location if he wants to live or avoid serious jail time.I think your wishes are coming true. The homegrown ‘Kidons’ are ready and willing to carry out the wishes of any master. If there’s no master, they’ll act on their own and lord knows, people will continue to die on both sides. Will only the guilty die?

Mr. Were’s demise will most certainly spark another wave of violence and possibly a counteroffensive targeting low-ranking officials by those who feel that this may have been an assassination approved by the higher-ups in government. Kenya is well and truly fucked from the front, back and sideways.
Still, I don’t think government higher-ups are involved but who is to stop their supporters from acting independently as is many times the case? Who is to say that ‘Mungiki’ Mwenje isn’t next in line? Kenya is an inferno that will rage for a long time before it burns itself out since all that’s happening is the addition of fuel to the flames. If [everything] isn’t dealt with swiftly and decisively, EVERYONE WILL BECOME FAIR GAME, including Kibaki and Raila. I don’t think even the best security detail in Kenya can prevent an assassination attempt on either of them as long as they appear in public.

I’m not even sure if the army is 100% behind the government [do you, KE?] even if their presence and firepower still does make a difference in the really hot spots. The army is quite diverse and I don’t think their loyalty to the republic is above their tribal loyalties.

As for Raila – He will not be president, now, in six months, in five years or any other time and even if there was a new election today, he’d still lose.

Kibaki will have a long and difficult five years as president and I truly hope he will be able to step up and lead from the front…he has to.

    —————

I’m curious, KE – How did DMW, Mr. Ruto, respond when presented with the allegations as described by the BBC? For one, he can’t plead insanity!

    Cheers

  9. That is good news to me that Were is dead,we had speculations that his going to Italy mostly he visited talismen and he was responsible for the death of Lady S. Rumours has it that he promised to take her to italy on one of his campaign in Dandora, when he failed to do that, he had to secure a place in hearts of many that he is not a let down, thus he did what he did.

    Edge of Sanity,

You hit the nail on the head.

Only a miracle will get us out of this one.

However, I am a bit of a conspiracy theorist. Many times my theories turn out to be right………..What if WERE [never heard of him before] was a sacrificial lamb by his own party just to give them more excuses to make the other side look bad and cause havoc at the same time. After all this is politics [ a dirty game as we've come to know]

  11. Edgeofsanity:

I’m trying to find that audio clip of Ruto on the BBC. He just kept denying that he was involved saying he was a “mature” politician and violence does not advance the cause of democracy (or something along those lines).

That BBC reporter was ripping into him and it actually shocked me. This violence has turned people away from Raila’s cause. I don’t think Ruto was prepared for that line of questioning. He thought it would be an easy interview criticizing Kibaki but the tides have changed.

I’m sure Ruto has ramped up his security (but his “hit” will be much more professional because it will not be done by mungiki’s). They can’t shoot him – that would make it too obvious. There’s probably going to be a car accident or something along those lines.

Someone here mentioned that Were was involved in some petrol bomb incident. Could we get more information on that?

    Roslyn:
You are right about these MP’s need to use their salaries to invest in more personal security. If I was an MP the first thing I would invest in was a bullet proof car.

I really didn’t know much about this MP, But it does seem wierd. whatever the motive, this was definitely murder for hire, he did not just succumb to random crime, someone wanted him dead, and for what ?

Why would anyone want this guy gone? was it a business dispute or another work/business related rivalry ?

was it a political dispute with a political adversary ?

one thing is for sure, whoever planned this could not have chosen a worse time coz hopefully the cops will do their job due to all the media heat.

However, does anyone rememeber the MBAI murder? it started with alot of fanfare and hype but at the end of the day, they just caught two thugs and did not go after the actual guys who wanted him dead. and who were they, does anyone know ?
    and for what reason ?

What if WERE [never heard of him before] was a sacrificial lamb by his own party just to give them more excuses to make the other side look bad and cause havoc at the same time.

Mzalendo, that’s a rather extreme possibility…but then again, Pandora’s box is wide open in Kenya.

If this murder was planned by higher ups, even the gunmen won’t be alive for long; I hope they know that they will be eventually eliminated in an attempt to keep it a mystery.

I think the late MP Were was selected because he was an easy target. I don’t know exactly what he’s guilty of as far as the violence but he did oust former MP Mwenje, a known Mungiki ally. It could easily be the primary reason he was killed and everything else was a bonus.

As far as the details on Who, What, Why, Where, When and How? It will all come out sooner or later and someone [innocent or guilty] will go down for it. If it was Mungiki, someone is bragging about it right now and it will come out.
    You watch.

    Cheers

    MTEJA,

I don’t see how you say it’s good news that this guy died, honestly.

    KE,

True not much was known about this guy but according to today’s NY Times, there are some revelations about him that could explain his death.

Apparently, he is described as one who’d not blindly follow ODM’s belligernt ways. He was also trying to reach out to leaders from both ends to forge peace and reconciliation.

He’d also built a footbridge in the slums with his own money, and his campaign posters had him alongside street children.

It’s clear that a person with these type of characteristics does not fit well into the dictatorship that is ODM.

I think he was genuine and wanted to help people in his constituency.

I also think he was killed to intimidate other “newly elected, young and independent ” minded ODM Legislators.

I know ODM has alot of new MP’s who are progressive but this was done to show them that they have to tow the line the ODM way

    #48076
  15. Mzeiya,
Being progressive means nothing than what is in ones heart and mind, arent you happy that you are alive, this guy was caught with the petro bombs on his vehicle designed to kill innocent Kenyans. But he instead he has died thats why the people of Embakasi are happy.

    MTEJA

I don’t know about the petro bombs story..If that’s true, then that’s sad.

What I know is what I read about him in the NY Times today.

He was a self made busiessman who used his own money to build footbridges in the slums, he also educated girls in the slums and his campaign posters had him with street boys/children.

He was also actively involved in trying to bridge the tribal gap and bring leaders together in reconciliation and peace.

I saw his swearing in in parliament and the guy didn’t show any theatrix, he swore allegiance to the president.

It just appears to me that ODM needed to teach other young progressive MP’s a lesson. It’s eithr the ODM way or Coffin

  17. MZEIYA

This story was highlited again in the NY Times. It seems these NY Times journalist update he story as they gather more information.

here’s the link, I’d urge everyone to read, it is an eye opener

It says that this guy was disillusioned by his party and was considering defecting. He was also scheduled to meet President Kibaki.

go figure, that may hold the clue as to why ODM would kill their own

    #48136
  18. Mzeiya:
Thanks for that link. I’ve clipped out the relevant portions of that article and posted it here. I don’t know if this is government propagands or what? David Mwenje has been pretty quiet. Where is he?

    Article from the nyt:
Government officials said that they were continuing to investigate the killing of Melitus Mugabe Were, a freshman member of Parliament, who was shot to death in his driveway on Tuesday morning. But it seems that the case is only getting murkier.

A local newspaper reported that his wallet was stolen, implying a possible robbery, but his brother-in-law, Vincent Nyabeii, said that was not true. “Nothing was taken, nothing,” he said. “This was an assassination.”

Many supporters have said Mr. Were, a self-made businessman who was revered in the slum where he grew up, was killed by thugs employed by the government because he was a member of the opposition. If he was eliminated and a new election was held, his supporters said, his seat would probably go to a member of the government’s party.

But it is not clear how solid an opposition member he was. He was a moderate by all accounts and was seen as a potential peacemaker. Members of Mr. Kibaki’s party said Mr. Were was even considering defecting, which could have tipped the balance of power in Parliament, where the opposition has a slight edge. On Wednesday, one government official said that right before the killing, Mr. Were made an appointment to meet with the president and that he might have been slain by people in his own party who saw him as a traitor.

    KE,

Don’t quote me on this one but I’m learning that , allegedly, Mwenje is in Aga Khan Hospital sick…has been sick for a while.

I know for sure that if Mugabe Were was as independnet minded as the NYT says he was, he was an endangered species within the ODM.

Remember ODM loves Raila ass kissers like Ababu, or is it Ali Baba…

That’s why ODM were so adamant on having open ballot to elect speaker. They wanted to monitor each MP’s vote to make sure everyone voted for Marende.

ODM Knows they have new, young and progressive MP’s who may not necesarily tow their line and kiss Raila’s ass.

Remember, the cabinet is still half full and recall Amos Kimunya saying that the government was talking to some moderate ODM Mp’s to fill in those positions?
    well Go Figure

Mugabe’s Kiiling is a sign to the rest who were thinkin in those lines not to.

recall, the article clearly says the guy was disillusioned with ODM.This was a really a good potential leader who just wanted to develop his constituents. But lok what happened.

It’s about time the government made the big fish to start rolling i.e kina RUTO

  20. ODM Damu(imwagike)

stop your fucking conspiracy theories. We all know his death was planned by PNU to scare off any ODM aspirants. But I will not be shaken, we all die eventually, and justice must prevail at all times. Mugabe Were is not the first political martyr and certainly won’t be the last; in this country’s history, or the world!

    #48316
  21. MZEIYA

    ODM Damu,

Mugabe is a political Matyr ? do you even know the reason he died for before coming here to yap your mouth ?

Matyr’s die fighting for a cause, do you know the cause Hon Were was fighting for ?

From the scant information I’ve gotten about him, he was a man who was trying to forge peace across ethnic and political lines. We also know he married a kikuyu wife so obviuosly he did not have the kikuyu phobia a=or the anti-kikuyu hate that ODM used a campaign platform.

Even during his swearing in ceremony, he didn’t pull ass kisisng theatrix like Ababu or Orengo, He simply swore his allegiance, didn’t make a fuss about it and moved on.

He was scheduled to meet President Kibaki the follwoing day- according to the NYT. Now you’ll come up and say the NYT is in on this conspiracy. The article also mentions that he had grown disillusioned by his party, a sI’m sure many of those MP’s are doing.

you guy, the PNU Government has more urgent matters to deal with at this time than assasinating a small fish who is a harmless, government friendly OPPOSITION MP. It would be foolhardy for them to do that.

On the other hand ODM is not confident in the new buch of young MP’s it has. ODM Knows they do not fully agree with the pentagon’s idiotioc agendas, and I strongly believe this was meant to be a lesson to the rest.

so you ODM Damu guy, I’d appreciate it if you put some substance behind your argumets instead of yapping hot air with nothing to back it up.

I’m tired of all you ODM Clowns yapping yapping hot air with no inch of evidence.

Just the way I’m tired of Raila saying he won 7 out of 8 provinces, while he only won 4.

I’m tired of this repeated lie that the elections were rigged and that’s why Raila Lost…..he lost fair and sqaure…

So don’t hide behind these repeated lies, come out, explain your position and then you’ll begin to make sense…but again you’re in ODM and they never make sense so why should I be surprised ?

    #48344
  22. ODM Damu

Now who’s yapping! And for the record you mzeiya idiot, sonuvabitch, we don’t ‘yap our mouths.’ What kind of English is that? You sayin’ you’re tired of ODM, I say I’m tired of your long articles which are full of shit! . Observers (both intenational and local) admitted flaws. There’s no government in this country as yet. kibaki thinks he can steal eveything; some things are just plain unstealable!

Hoping to hear from you soon, you bonehead of a Kenyan. These kinds of sentiments could only come from a PNU imbecile(they all are anyways) who has no clue of local or international affairs. I demand you make an apology on this blogg on your ass-mindedness before the end of this week! Dumkopff!!

    ODM Damu,

looking at your language, you seem like one who can not have a diplomatic dialogue and argue yourself out. It depicts of a person hungry-for-revenge character.Polish up and learn to articulate your issues without the vulgar tone. We are all to blame. What you need to know is that it’s the ordinary citizen suffering out of the whole mess.
