Send this article to Twitter! There’s a lengthy article in GQ magazine about the pirates in Somalia and as is the case with all these pirate stories, Kenya is always mentioned, both as a base for many of the middle men who are organizing these groups and as a conduit transfer hub for the ransom money. As as I was reading this article from GQ, I came across this interesting paragraph about the ship that the Somali’s had captured that was full of weapons and that the Kenyan government claimed was meant for them. The quote from the article follows: “Once on board, the pirates did a fast inventory of the cargo and discovered they’d hit the jackpot, Somali-style, with $30 million in arms now in their possession. They went through the paperwork on the bridge and learned that the T-72 tanks and grenade launchers were not destined for Kenya, as the Kenyan government claimed, but were actually headed to a former rebel army that now runs Southern Sudan, and that the port of Mombasa was simply the transit point. It was yet another shady African arms deal, which likely involved million-dollar kickbacks for the Kenyan officials who helped facilitate [...]

Send this article to Twitter!I was having a discussion last night about these Somali Pirates and how succesful they’ve been in terms of getting millions of dollars from the ships they’ve hijacked. I think so far, the Somali’s have gotten about $150 million dollars in cash! wow! Anyway, someone mentioned that Mombasa is about to experience a real estate property boom because a lot of this money is going to end up there and probably in other parts of Kenya. In other words, this piracy is going to benefit the Kenyan economy. I was reading an article on how the money actually gets into the hands of these pirates and here is a first hand account from one of the owners of a hijacked German ship: “The state bank in Bremen did not have enough dollars on hand. Bank notes had to be brought in from Hamburg, and because the state bank there could only pay out a portion of the large sum in $20 bills instead of $100 bills, the shipping company needed two large pilot suitcases to accommodate all of the money. It was then flown to the Kenyan capital Nairobi, where it was loaded onto a helicopter [...]

Send this article to Twitter!I’ve had Hirsi’s book Infidel on my list of things to read and I finally got started with it yesterday. I didn’t think I’d enjoy it, but once I started reading it, I couldn’t put it down. Ali is a very good writer and she has a very compelling personal story. I haven’t finished reading the book, but from what I’ve read so far, they are three powerful themes that are emerging from this book (at least from my reading of it). The first theme is the violence inherent in Somali culture. Ali’s mother sounds like she was suffering from some kind of deep depression and she unleashed her anger out on her daughter in the form of severe physical abuse. She would tie Hirsi’s hands behind her back and beat her and beat her and beat her (for any minor infraction). When Hirsi got her period, she had no clue what was happening to her body. They had been no discussion of this in her house and the Kenyan school she went to hadn’t gotten to this part of biology yet. When she asked her mother what was going on, she was beaten and called [...]

Send this article to Twitter!I was reading Bankele’s blog and there is a heated discussion on Kenya Airways (it’s mainly about the coming competition and it’s safety record). As I’m reading through the comment section, I started getting a headache (particularly from comments left by “Me” — “it’s the pride of Africa”, the pride of Africa, the prrrr; I couldn’t take it). Then, Bankelele left a comment saying that the two accidents (which have occurred within a 7 year span, were just due to “bad luck”!!). So, I’m going to back up my shit and present an article I just read in the New York Times about airline safety in America. Fatal airline crashes have dropped by 65% and it’s NOT because of “Luck”. It was because of a concerted effort by the government and the airline industry to find ways to reduce the rate of domestic fatal accidents, through the use of technology, testing, research and hard work! Here is the article on airline safety. If you read it (as I did) you will very clearly see why the rate of fatal crashes was reduced. I hope Naikuni and Kenya Airways are putting in this kind of due diligence [...]

Send this article to Twitter!I don’t know about you guys, but these Somali’s are beginning to make me nervous. First, they abduct and kill two kenyan policmen (Shifta’s). Then, they plant a bomb in a matatu which kills one innocent person (was this a trial run for a bigger plot?). The main suspect was of course a Somali living in Eastleigh and I can’t for the life of me understand why the Kenyan police initially said they were looking for a Rwandese! When I first heard that news, I said to myself that it had to be either a Somali or an Arab from Mombasa. I guess I don’t understand why the Kenyan police are downplaying these two incidents. These shifta’s are up to something. I’m telling you….they’re up to something…. NB: I guess no one is worried about these somali bombers and abductors. Shauri zenu (wait till your heads start getting blown off!) Share on Facebook

Send this article to Twitter! From the NYT: “Residents of Mogadishu say hundreds of fighters from other Muslim countries have arrived at the city’s main airport in recent days, drawn by the Islamists’ blaring call for a holy war against Ethiopia and against America, which is especially despised here”. This is not good for Kenya at all. Why do Somali’s think they’re Arabs? Ethiopians have the same problem. Is it because of their “curly” hair and their “long” noses? Samburu’s and Rendille’s have similar features, but they don’t think of themselves as anything other than “African” (btw..those Rendille’s are very good looking people. see the picture below). Look at this guy’s facial features. Everything is perfectly aligned, even his teeth are symetrical! Anyway, it’s common knowledge that Saudi Arabia has been providing a lot of money to these islamic groups in the form of “charity” and “aid”. However, the money is not being used to buy food. It’s being used to buy arms. African countries like Kenya need to be very, very, wary of this Saudi money connection. If these Saudi’s start giving money to radical Kenyan Arabs in places like Mombasa and Lamu, it’s going to cause all sorts [...]

Send this article to Twitter! These people don’t look like “traditional Somali’s”. So, I’m assuming they are the so called bantu Somali. Anyway, this global warming issue is causing huge problems in many African countries. Meteorlogists are saying that East Africa has experienced the worst flooding in 50 years. In Somalia, it’s really becoming a huge disaster because according to the article below..”Few aid agencies have come to the rescue. Southern Somalia’s reputation for chaos and bloodshed has scared off most foreign aid workers, leaving the bulk of relief efforts in the hands of a new Islamic administration that is increasingly distracted by the prospects of war with Ethiopia.” In a continent full of despair and hopelessness, Somalia has to be the worst case scenario. If these foreign aid workers are too afraid to go into Somalia they should consider hiring Somali refugee’s who are based in Kenya. I’m sure they’d be willing to go in and help their fellow countrymen. That’s another reason why I hate this organizations — they rarely hire locals! The Somali’s in Kenya speak the language, they understand the culture, they know the country…why wouldn’t you hire them? Somalia descends Share on Facebook

Send this article to Twitter! From the Economist: Mr Aweys, a fervent nationalist, was decorated for bravery as a Somali army colonel in the 1977 war (the war against Ethiopia). He wants an Islamic emirate of Somalia, taking in the mainly Somali parts of Ethiopia and Kenya. Is the Kenyan army prepared for the possibility of another shifta war? The only thing that gives me solace is knowing that American and Britain will never let Kenya be taken over by a bunch of islamo crazies. Mr. Aweys needs to be careful. If he keeps yucking it up like this, michuki will have no problem giving the Americans permission to launch that “drone” over Somalia. It would not be hard to find him – Somalia does not have high mountains and caves like Afghanistan. It doesn’t even have forests. What’s this fool thinking?
