Craig Newmark: Founder of Craigslist

Craigslist is a classified ad website that really grew virally (no venture capital money was used to grow it). The last time I checked, the site was bringing in about $20 million dollars a month and it only has about five employee’s! (it’s probably making more now). Anyway, it is the most popular classified ad site in America.

I’d say the Kenyan equivalent of craigslist would be Nairobist.com. I’m pretty sure Nairobist is not making $20 million dollars a month, but at some point, these Kenyan sites are going to start making money. I’m just not sure when it will happen(will it be when the fiber optic cable arrives?).

Right now, I think Mashada is probably the largest money making Kenyan website (I’d guess it’s bringing in a few thousand dollars a month). I’m very curious to see how these Kenyan-centric sites will evolve over time and how they’ll try to make money (why do I believe that the internet revolution is about to hit Africa in a big way & people are underestimating it…am I crazy?)
