Someone sent me this link of a fantastic interview with Felix Dennis, the founder of Maxim Magazine. In the interview, Dennis (who is a high school drop-out and self-made multimillionaire) essentially says that to become very wealthy, which he defines as having a net worth above $30 million dollars, you essentially have to be ruthless and selfish (listen to interview here. You’ll need either windows or real player to hear it).

The interview is refreshing because he is so brutally honest about how he did it and what others need to do if they want to do it. There’s a business school professor from Harvard who is brought on to counter-act what he is saying and she accuses him of not knowing what he’s talking about! can you believe that shit? a freaking academic, telling a self-made multimillionaire, that he doesn’t know about business. As I listened to the interview, I was waiting for him to ask this “academic” whether or not she had ever started or even ran any business, but he never did (he was too busy yelling at her for other ridiculous things she was saying). What do they say about academics: “those who can’t do, teach”. hmmmm…

Anyway, it’s an interesting radio interview to listen to if you are on the internet doodling around (turn it on and listen to it while you are checking your email or wasting time on facebook).

He also has an autobiography out on how he did it:

So, after listening to the interview, what do you think?

Let me pre-empt by saying, I haven’t yet listened to the recording (but I will). In the interim, I can’t help but think that there’s got to be different ways to make money. I do take exception (?) to this particular method – being ruthless, selfish or an “asshole” to get somewhere in life. However, it seems to be the most common way – step on as many toes along the way as you can, right?

If life has enough for all, meaning there’s enough to go around, do we need to be selfish or as ruthless? See I think what keeps us from reaching our “lofty” goals is an internal setting – as I read somewhere…”If the thought of lack – whether it be money, recognition or love – has become a part of who you think you are, you will always experience lack…Both scarcity and abundance are inner states that manifest as your reality.” So, all I have to think is I have enough or plenty and it will come to me…Ha! I will let you know how this mindset goes and whether it works!! :)
