I’m very confused….
I really need to stop watching these reality shows. They’re messing with my mind. So, last night, I found myself watching yet another reality show about “rich” people. I know, I know…these shows are heavily edited and they’re not going to have a reality show of people living in trailer parks, but…I kept asking myself how these people are making so much money! what on earth are they doing?
I think I’ve boiled it down to one thing: SALES. They are all very good salesmen and saleswomen. And when I say sales, I mean, they are directly involved in the selling and marketing of their products. Most of them are selling either real estate, insurance or mortgages. Not surprisingly, a lot of them also have very outgoing personalities. If you don’t have this innate outgoing personality, I really don’t think you can make it as a salesperson. During the show, you see them making their sales pitches — they’re constantly on the phone calling people, they’re going to people’s offices, they’re taking them to lunch and on & on & on….
We’ve all met people who are just bursting out with personality. The first time you meet them, you just want to be around them because they are so much fun –they’re talkative, their funny, etc, etc. On the other hand, we’ve also met people who’ll just bore you to tears. Most of my former professor’s would fall into this category. They were days when I would sit in a lecture hall and just start crying –out of sheer boredom. I never thought another human being could literally bore me to tears, but they did. Lord have mercy! It really was intentional infliction of emotional distress. I know why academics are not rich. If they tried to sell anything to you, you’d fall asleep in the middle of the sales pitch. Phew!
Anyway, if you don’t have that innate personality, what are you to do? I suppose you could hire someone who has it, but if you can’t afford to do that, what are you going to do? In other words, can you learn how to sell?
