Kenya Airways Safety Record: Enough With The Emotionalism
I was reading Bankele’s blog and there is a heated discussion on Kenya Airways (it’s mainly about the coming competition and it’s safety record).
As I’m reading through the comment section, I started getting a headache (particularly from comments left by “Me” — “it’s the pride of Africa”, the pride of Africa, the prrrr; I couldn’t take it).
Then, Bankelele left a comment saying that the two accidents (which have occurred within a 7 year span, were just due to “bad luck”!!).
So, I’m going to back up my shit and present an article I just read in the New York Times about airline safety in America. Fatal airline crashes have dropped by 65% and it’s NOT because of “Luck”. It was because of a concerted effort by the government and the airline industry to find ways to reduce the rate of domestic fatal accidents, through the use of technology, testing, research and hard work!
Here is the article on airline safety. If you read it (as I did) you will very clearly see why the rate of fatal crashes was reduced. I hope Naikuni and Kenya Airways are putting in this kind of due diligence and not leaving the safety record of the airline up to “God” or to “luck”.
Headache??? Take some tylenol and you’ll be fine.
Meanwhile…
Since when was KQ compared to America????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
This is not even apples to oranges…..its kinda like omena to a whale.
However…
KQ has had 2 fatal crashes in under 10 years.
The attached article says that….there have been two infamous crashes in ONE YEAR (1996) that together killed 375 people.
We have not even included Mr.Osama’s 9/11 crash.
Do the math!!!
I must again defend KQ though I don’t fly as much as I used to, and I don’t own any shares this year.
If I may quote from the NY Times article “some of the improvement may be luck, as there is an element of randomness to crashes…..Airlines around the world, even in less-developed nations, have also benefited from equipment improvements, like cockpit instruments that help planes steer clear of mountains when visibility is poor, and jet engines that are so reliable that pilots can go through their entire careers without seeing one fail.”
Yes I said bad luck as in that something went wrong in two flights over a 7 year span. If any other sub-Saharan airline company (excluding SAA) had crashed, it would be forgotten in a week – but not KQ.
Our own head in the sand approach to official reports also damages KQ and our aviation credibility. The Abidjan report has never been officaly released (though it’s available on the internet). Another example is here: “In 2007, the government released reports of two small air accidents that occurred years ago ZS-OYI (July 2003 tourist plane that crashed atop mt. Kenya) and 5Y-AZX (crashed in Jan 2005)
Elements of a flight: plane, pilot, airport, weather, other. KQ has taken care of personnel and equipment. Their staff are properly trained, their maintenance center serves other regional airlines and the two planes which crashed were relatively new (B737 was the latest model and the A310, while having a dozen years of service was young in airline years)
I don’t defend them out of patriotism – they are a good company that has embarked on a very ambitious program to profitability. Yes they re stretched, but I don’t believe they have compromised on safety
Me:
um…did you put in enough question marks? The attacks on 9/11 were a deliberate act of terrorism. They were not caused by a faulty airline or by pilot error. So, that analogy is not applicable in this specific scenario. If you want to talk about airport security, we can talk about that, but that’s a whole different thread.
Banks:
Everything in life can be (if you want) attributed to “luck”. However, the majority of the article specifically outlines the measures they took to reduce their accident rates. Two accidents in 7 years, in the same region (west africa) is not “bad luck” and they need to figure out what’s going on.
If Ethiopian Airlines had crashed it would have been in the news. Actually, I’d say any airline with hundreds of people that crashes will in fact make the news.
