Kenyan Students Being Arrested in Asia For Drugs…
I was reading about Donde’s daughter and I just feel terrible for that poor woman! Kenyans need to stop sending their kids to countries that have these extreme laws!! I know people say Malaysia is supposed to be a lot cheaper than America, but I don’t think it’s that much cheaper and even if it is…is it really worth the risk? If you’re going to immigrate, the best places to go are still the United States or Western Europe & America beats Europe by far just because it has a lot more options. E.g.
And if it takes you five, six or even seven years to get that degree…that’s fine. I think sometimes parents in Kenya think that their kids have to finish school in exactly 3 years and start working full-time (immediately) and everything must be done within a specified time frame… but life doesn’t work that way.
At a very minimum, the ministry of foreign affairs should have a mandatory drug law class for any Kenyan student leaving for any Asian country — don’t hand out passports until these kids have attended the class and know what awaits them if they get caught with drugs.
I differ on this one… regardless of the country where one goes ‘respect to law’ is paramount whether your folks send you to the US, Europe or Malaysia… And suggesting that MoFA provides mandatory drug law classes is just a waste of resources which can be directed elsewhere… parents should be the champions in instilling discipline in their kids and not the government… kwani does a company outsource a consultant to teach them their own values????
Thankfully i did my undergrad in Kenya in just 3 years… taking 6 or 7 years to complete a 4 year degree is complete nonsense…i just don’t get it… What amazes me is that parents sell their property just to come up with fees which barely covers for a year’s worth of tuition… solution; use that money to send them to a local uni (no stress of working, paying bills) then come Master’s, send the child out to the States, Europe or wherever… uni were my best days… i wouldn’t want anyone to spend it kazanaing paying utilities, car notes, credit cards & other misc stuff…
JL:
You make some good points – going abroad when you are somewhat more mature is better.
And I do think if you can get into the university of Nairobi it’s not such a bad option (but getting in is very, very, hard!) –what’s the % of people who get in? I bet you it’s less than 5%.
Also, going to a school like USIU is another option if your parents can afford it.
I think the drug laws in Asia are draconian and 18 year olds do stupid things. Do you know how many stupid things I did when I was 18? It wasn’t my parents fault. I just needed to mature.
why are you opposed to taking 6 or 7 years to get a degree? what difference does it make if you wind up getting it in the end?
Don’t take drugs…
Even an 18-year old knows its stupid… especially in a country that TELLS you upfront that the penalties are severe!
CT:
I don’t think they took the drugs or even intended to sell them. Based on what I’ve read, they went to visit these 2 guys at their condo who happened to have the drugs with them.
The blood tests are negative, but the urine tests were positive (this can happen if you are sitting in a room where someone else is smoking and you inhale the smoke.
It sounds like they were just in the wrong company. So, don’t get self-righteous here…think back to when you were 18 and how many stupid decisions you made
Well…
1) No drugs… I never have & never will… I read about the effects & made a concious decision not to do something stupid…
2) Well, if the girls are innocent then I hope they are set free… I think that has already happened… I do feel sorry for them if they are innocent…
3) In general, its like smoking… you KNOW its bad for you then DON’T do it… if you do then don’t blame the tobacco companies or government. You are the idiot!
Who hasn’t seen ads or been warned about the DANGERS of drugs?
The penalties are severe especially so in certain countries including Thailand, Malaysia & Sinagapore… I believe other Islamic countries also frown on drugs… esp if you are a foreigner smuggling/selling the stuff.
I don’t care if you are 16… you KNOW drugs are bad for you!
um…you’ve never even smoked a joint? I haven’t, but I’m going to give it a try (i’m curious)
Most kenyans don’t do drugs. we get plastered on alcohol. so imagine living in a country were alcohol is forbidden!
No… never smoked a joint… never felt the urge or need…
Alcohol… yes, but in limitation… Is alcohol banned in Malaysia?
To be honest… if I were in Saudi Arabia or even some “fundamentalist” country – I would avoid alcohol… too high a price to pay!
I had alcohol in Dubai (served only at “international” hotels & the airport), they don’t care as long as you are a non-muslim foreigner… Even Emirates serves alcohol…
