Kimunya Resigns…..
Well, Kimunya did himself in. He really did. He got cocky and he didn’t think he’d get caught. I don’t understand why he would even attempt to do something like this at a time when 50% of the country is still pissed off about the election results and then, not expect to get caught selling one of the country’s key landmark hotels. (Kimunya: I have a wife and a daughter, and, and, and….).
I’ve said many times before that in a fair world, Anyang Nyongo should be Kenya’s finance minister. I suspect Kibaki is going to try and replace Kimunya with either a Kikuyu or a Mkamba, but Nyongo should be in there because it’s a tough job and you need a thinker and a policy maker and that’s what Nyongo would bring to the job.
So, who would you like to see as Kenya’s new finance minister?
** I am adding this interview here of India’s finance minister P. Chidambaram. I had posted it before, but I’m posting it again because I think every country should have a finance minister who can be this articulate on the world stage. When I first listened to this interview, I thought to myself: “there’s no way Kimunya would be able to talk like this.” (and this was way before Kimunya was in trouble).
So, that’s why I’m posting this video again. I think someone like Anyang Nyongo would be able to give an interview like this and because a finance minister is in some ways a countries economic cheerleader, the minister has to be able to go out (on the international scene) and articulate a countries positions and instill confidence in people that the country’s finances are being run and managed by competent, smart people. Chidambaram does that for his country. Who could do it for Kenya?

Not Oburu Odinga… I think he may be clean as can be but somehow he does not engender confidence…
We need a non-politician… I wish ODM or PNU would nominate an MP who can take the post like Manmohan Singh of India when he was appointed as a technocrat by Rajeev Gandhi.
Please… no to a politician as Finance Minister!!!
And it would be good if the appointment was vetted by the House as is done in the USA.
And someone who can/will make unpopular decisions – sound free-market economics – for the benefit of the majority of Kenya.
I ‘d also like any’ang Ny’ong
I’m so with cold tusker. Problem is, if you can’t politicize anything, most times everything, it’s hard to get anywhere near parliament. The whole ‘meat vs bones’ kinda talk comes to mind. Finance is where the gravy is.
Talking of Amos, isn’t it hilarious when these dudes hold rallies only when they need votes or are in some deep trouble? Trying hard to introduce an ‘us vs them’ twist to issues.
I had predicted the fall of Amos Kimunya in a blog in WordPress
I said ODM would scheme his falling away
Maybe he should have listened more
All his good work will erased by the unpopular exit
I recommend Michuki
as a fight back
i admire his no nonsense approach to his duties
plus he was humbled to a lower ministry which he accepted which he accepted enthusiastically

Anyang Nyong should not go anywhere near the finance ministry. This guy has no mind of his own. He is a Raila sycophant and a socialist to boot. A very bad combination in the present circumstances.
Did you see how he behaved during the recent troubles? Deplorable. Disgraceful press conferences where he incited the hoi polloi to riot and burn their neighbourhoods in the name of mass action.
There are also unconfirmed rumours that he is the brains behind the use of a particularly vicious form of anti-Kikuyuism as a campaign tool. It appears to have worked very well for ODM but it almost brought the country to a brutal civil war.
I think Michuki should take that docket and instill some efficiency. But I doubt he would want it……
KE:
There are alot of capable finance ministers who do not speak fluent English. Fluent English is not synonymous with right decision making.
Not Anyang. I think CT may have a pt, but only if the guy is vetted by parliament because otherwise you can get somebody who is beholden to Kibz or RAO.
I think John Michuki would do oaky. And still get caught with his hands in the cookie jar-remember Citihoppa, Triple A and the KPA Cranes issues when he was at Transport? And its recycling the samo samo…
Perhaps Peter Kenneth because he has done the assistant job before.
Or a longshot, Mithika Linturi…

PETER KENETH No way :
He is a fouth former: (old o -level)
plus ACNC stage 1. Finished
Zero EDUCATION
funny how kimunya has been tried, found guilty and crucified through public opinion and baseless arguments. This is one of the many reasons why kenya hardly moves forward. people need to argue using facts pertaining to the case at hand and stop using the media as a source of info. the media is out to sell the better story which in many times is in half truths. i am not advocating for kimunya but i believe he should be tried justly without the politicizing of the whole issue. let someone produce the facts and he be judged by them. if he is found liable, get punished under lawful means. if not, get back to his work. he’s probably the best finance minister kenya has had with the exclusion of kibaki (even though kibaki had some scandal himself. not quite sure what it was).
No, I wasn’t seconding the Nyong’o thing. I think he is very capable, PhD and all- but I haven’t known what to make of him after his post-election violence conduct.
I have heard Anyang Nyongo speak, debate & being interviewed. By no means is he as articulate as Palaniappan Chidambaram (wow… I just copied & pasted that in… long name!)
AN’s interview would take 2-3 hours since he speaks in staccato… and very slow… so unless you fast-forwarded the interview… you could take a nap, have dinner & exercise while AN makes a point!
I still think we need a NON-POLITICIAN (but a clean enlightened technocrat) as M. Singh & P.C were when they first became FMs. Of course, the FM needs the full support of the political gurus & the public.
coldtusker:
Manmonhan Singh is a politician, as is P. Chidambaram. They are both MP’s and were politicians of the congress party when Rajiv Gandhi appointed them. They are long time congress party politicians.
Yes – AN’s slow speaking style can be quite annoying, but it’s much easier than listening to Kimunya’s stummering problem or Peter Kenneth’s semi-literate statements.
Kei O:
My point had nothing to do with the ability of someone to speak fluent English. Where did you get that from? I’m sure the finance minister of China is quite capable even if he may not speak English. It’s about being articulate in whatever language you speak and being able to talk about broad issues in a way that makes sense.
Not M.Singh… he was a technocrat until his appointment but was nominated MP. In Kenya the nominated MPs are political favours!
PC… yes, I googled him.
CT & KE,
As I’ve always advocated, a solution to one of kenya’s government staffing woes is this: Ministers should be technocrats, i.e. they should not be MP’s or politicians.
Let MP’s have the sole duty of representing their constituents.
