Moi is Amazing!

A lot of you have probably seen this video.

Here is Moi telling his Kalenjin peps to vote for Kibaki because if Raila becomes president, he will implement the Ndungu Report and go after the wealth of the Kenyatta and Moi families. Therefore, he wants these obviously poor villagers to use the power of their vote to protect the wealth of the Moi and Kenyatta families. I just heard Gideon Moi repeat the same line (going after land is dangerous; why, if the vast majority of the land is in the hands of a few?)YouTube Preview Image

I got into a discussion about this issue of going after stolen wealth with someone and he asked me to name the places in the world where going after stolen wealth has actually produced anything meaningful. I went down a list of countries, but none has succeeded in reclaiming stolen wealth:

  • Nigeria — the only reason they got Abacha’s wealth was because his wife was stupid enough to stuff $500 million dollars in cash in suitcases on her way to England (she was promptly arrested at Heathrow airport).
  • Indonesia — Suharto’s kids are still living la vida loca.
  • The Phillipines – The Marco’s didn’t return a thing.
  • Chile – All they could find was $5 million dollars from Pinochet.
  • So, do the above examples mean that Raila {or whoever} shouldn’t even try? I think they should try, but they should go after the hard, cold, cash (& hopefully use it for some common good) — and I would not consider this to be the equivalent of redistribution of wealth (because the wealth was not honestly obtained through industry or ingenuity).

I dont know if you are AIESEC Alumni but the AA Network has a discussion forum on yahoo groups that has the most heated and educative political debate on Kenya that i have seen.

Its an invitation-only event but i dont know if its restricted to AIESEC Alumni only.
