Mungiki Now Using Grenades?!!

From the Nation: “In the city incident, the gangsters exploded a grenade at the Kariobangi South bar at 10pm on Thursday and sped off in a vehicle firing indiscriminately, killing five motorists, a bar attendant and two taxi drivers”.

This is worrisome. This is very, very, worrisome.

I said previously that the root causes of the growth of Mungiki needed to addressed. Many thought they were just a bunch of violent gangsters who needed to be shot on sight. Michuki did that, didn’t he? he sent the GSU into Mathare and shot them (I think some people where innocent, but how do you defend yourself against an armed GSU man who takes you into a dark alley at gunpoint?)

And now what? the violence continues….

This reminds me of what Bush is doing in Iraq. He overreacted to the events of 9/11 and foolishly thought that he could teach these terrorists a lesson (“don’t mess with Texas”) by literally killing them off, but the results have proven otherwise. The violence in Iraq has stoked more anger and more violence.

I think sometimes it’s better to arrest people, try them in open court and throw them in jail. A trial would give you an opportunity to question them, cross-examine them and really find out how this organization is structured. Then, from there, you can begin to address the root causes of the problem.

Moving on to other matters….

I’ve enclosed an interesting article from the Economist on Kenya for your viewing. The Cheetah Generation.

A quote from the above article:

“Some aid has helped Kenya; some has not. It has never been crucial to the country’s prosperity. What Kenya needs most and has woefully lacked is a fairly clean, energetic government that mends the country’s dreadful infrastructure, with help from abroad if need be, and then lets Kenya’s many enterprising people get on without too much interference. It hasn’t happened yet. One day, perhaps, it may”.

This is one of the rare times that a mzungu has accurately captured what the country needs. The author is 100% correct on this.
