There’s a great article in the New York Times about the innovation that is taking place in Kenya where young people are beginning to find very creative ways of using their cell phones and this is leading them to discover new ways of utilizing technology for their specific needs and for that specific market.

A few weeks ago, I had an article on Google East Africa and I wondered why they were even moving into Kenya. Well, the above article answers my question. Google has seen potential in Kenya and they are trying to encourage it and hopefully grow it. According to Google’s CEO, Africa holds huge long-term potential for them and they are using Kenya as a test market for it’s long-term plans.

It’s pretty clear what’s happening. This global economy is being fueled by advances in technology and if you are an aspiring entrepreneur, {even in Africa} – this is where the growth is going to come from. The future is not in land or farming or even retail. It’s with the internet and it’s with technology and those Kenyans who’ve started these types of companies today, are going to become tomorrow’s millionaires.

I found a sampling of comments about this article on the Huffingtonpost: Not very flattering, to say the least.

    Examples:

“Yeah, I remember that last election in Palo Alto. Stuffed ballot boxes, ethnic cleansing, rape, looting, hundreds killed. Yeah, just like Palo Alto.
Man, people really must hate America”.

“Palo Alto or East Palo Alto?” (note: east palo alto is one of the worst ghettos’ in San Francisco!)
