Sleepless in Ruaraka: Starring Michael Gichangi
Can somebody email Michael Gichangi (the head of the NSIS) and tell him to wake up. A new year has dawned and we are three months into it.
The government is now admitting to being outwitted by Mungiki. The pattern of intelligence failures can no longer be ignored. Witness:
Please remember that the NSIS is the agency responsible for both internal and external threats to the country. So, if Gichangi can’t handle a bunch of unemployed rastafarians, how the heck is he going to handle terrorists slipping in from places like Somalia? The Kikambala hotel bombings and the attempted shoot down of the Israeli jetliner were all planned and executed by groups based in Somalia that had managed to slip into Kenya.
I don’t know why it’s so hard for Kibaki to fire people. He doesn’t have to run for office again, what is he afraid of?
It’s often said that the ideal president for a country is one who possesses both balls and brains. In Moi, we had balls, but no brains. With Kibaki we have brains (or at least used to) but no balls.
Do you see why we keep getting screwed? We haven’t quite found this ideal combination yet.
You’d think it would be easy to penetrate some of these groups by just putting a few of it’s members on the payroll (most of the men who join these groups are broke and unemployed and money would be a great inducer).
However, let me try and be balanced here. Gichangi was appointed in 2006 and he’s only been the boss for 2 years. Is that enough time to get things in order? Maybe one needs about 4 years before they can put their imprint on things.
What do you think?
Kanyotu was simply the best. He saw threats from far and neutralised them before they materialised. With the support of Moi of course.
Having said that, I have heard rumours that Kibaki is briefed every morning by the Internal Security minister and Brig Gichangi (as is the tradition in Kenya) but he chooses to ignore their reports.
So who do you blame???
But then again, I have been told that Mungiki is a different type of animal all together. I hear the oaths these men and women have taken are binding in totality.
I have heard that the oaths are like the last rites – meaning that these men and women have no fear of death. I also hear it is truly widespread and hence almost impossible to eliminate – and it is both men and women. Recruitment has been galvanised by the recent attacks on Kiuks which has resulted in a siege mentality.
Perhaps the problem is more social. It is to do with the breakdown of the traditional Kikuyu community and the void that ensued.
KE, KEI O
I agree that Gichangi needs the pink slip. However, as Kei O pointed out, I also think Kibaki has a role in this intelligence collapse. I honestly think kibaki is naive about security and threat issues. I guess Moi was on point for the same because he was almost overthrown during one of those intelligence”lapses”, so he became more aware and less naive about his real and perceived threats.
Why lie, I have to give it to Moi, he had the country on lock, despite him ignoring other issues like the economy.
I have a theory out there. I’ve observed that the gava has taken forever to address the Mt Elgon issue. when kiuks were sluaghtered like chicken in Rift Valley, the gava did absoluteley nothing, I repeat nothing. No high profile arrests, just small fish.
However, when the kiuk militia a.k.a Mungiki strike, the gava deals with the almost immediately, with no mercy at all.
Do I see a double standard here? Why does kibaki deal decisively with groups representing his kiuk community, but totally ignores those killing his kiuk community? does he loathe his fellow kiuks that much or does he loathe Poor , unemplyed uneducated kyuks who should not dare raise their voice about grievances?
I think kina Kibaki and Co are from the group of kenyans who were privillegded early on in that they got access to education during colonialism. They attended school and learnt the ways of the white man while their fellow breathren were waging guerilla warfare deep in the bushes against white oppression.
When kenya was finally granted independence, it wasn’t the brave mau mau warriors who tok on power despite them fighting for our land, It was kina kibaki’s group, young , educated africans who hadn’t lived in the busg fighting, but rather, had spent time in white schools, taught be missionaries. I guess, the british would rather leave the management of their colony to “civilized” natives i.e. those who’d gone to school, as oppossed to “savages” such as mau mau.
When this group of educated africans came to power, they only perpetuated the white man’s legacy. They did not bring any real radical reform, especially in terms of land reform. the whites gave them money to deal with this, i.e. buy land from whites , but the gava of the day instead dished out that land to the big wigs and connected individuals (kiuks…the educated ones )
As a result, the mau mau generation felt betrayed and finally saw this group for who they really were. The gava and elites of the day must have known this. Now, the original mau mau are long dead, but their descendants are not better off than they were, they are the ones continuing with this fight against the oppressive elites, and joined by young unemployed frustarted youth.
I guess kibaki’s gava deals with mungiki more decisively because they undertsand where their grievances and threats come from, and also I believe this group of elites kiuks really thinks that these “lower caste ” kiuks should be “put in their place”
I think the kiuk establishment is more afraid of these mungiki militia because they pose a real threat to the establishment.ask me why ?
First, unlike kale warriors, the mungiki strike in Nairobi, and we all know Nairobi and the rest of kenya are two differnt places/countries. Nairobi provides 60 % of kenya’s GDP.
sECONDLY, THE MUNGIKI ‘S GRIEVANCES to a certain extent are the grievances of most kenyans regardless of tribe: i.e. poverty, unemployemnt, lack of opportunities, anti-elitism, etc.
The kale warriors had their issues too, but those issues were more relevant in rift valley, unlike mungiki, or their new name, Kenya National Youth Alliance, whose issues are basically what most kenyans are facing.
Every community in Kenya have their gangs (warriors) or thugs so this Kikuyu problem should be handled by one of them or their spiritual leader and not let to overflow because if it gets out of hand the helpless IDP’s will be vulnerable as they are mostly from this community.
Other than that I wonder if they are smart enough to outsmart the security forces, why don’t they as a multitude they are storm the naivasha prison, overpower the guards and set their boss free. Hell’ if I had all these people in my command I would be free if they are 2million.
p.s. dont pass this to mungiki
MZEIYA
how many kikuyu’s were killed in Kisumu, and how may Jang’os were gunned down.
think b4 u talk
voh..what’s ur point? I don’t get it…
Mzeiya
Good points but only a small correction. Mungiki is no longer confined to the so-called poor Kiuks. They have been very busy recruiting in schools hence getting Kiuks of all backgrounds – rich and poor.
And as Kei O says I understand they have alot of young women among them these days.
They are also said to be highly organised, disciplined and motivated. Remember they do not even drink alcohol. They have also managed to recruit graduates and I guess that is how they are managing to mount seemingly intelligent missions.
Remember the ones you see on the streets are just a fraction of the movement. I hear they operate on orders and the ones you see demonstrating on the streets are not doing so by chance. They have been ordered to do so – in the meantime there are many others lying dormant but very much involved.
This mungiki thing may take decades before it is eliminated.
@Mzeiya
#Voh is trying to tell you Mungiki (at least recently) got covert co operation by state agents…They can riot in the CBD for hours ..none is shot or arrested…Imagine if was Kisumu …voh is saying
@Mzeiya
I concur with your point that mungiki grivances are sort of modern..(un employment etc). Its also got something to do with gangsterism and extortion . But of Late the Mungiki have added something akin to Kalenjin warriors ..LAND..The Mungiki now want those who stole their ancestral land in Central to GO!!!They said it on TV
@All
Will they ever end~
If Kenyas economy does not improve within 12 yrs (a generation) then this militias will morph into armies of communities. and risk the somalisation of kenya
ECONOMY is our salvation!1 URGENT
kei:
Who told you Kibaki doesn’t listen to intelligence reports? that would be crazy, especially in Africa where governments exist on such shaky ground.
LORD,
Thx for xplaining voh’s point.
KE
Honestly do u really think kibaki reads intelligence reports, or rather do u think he takes them seriuosly? I doubt if he does..
KE
On Kei O’s point that Kibai does not listen to intelligence reports, I have heard the same. I actually heard one of his closest supporters say the same thing. And I mean a very close supporter who would know what they are saying.
He was told about the preparations for genocide in the RV but he chose to ignore. He was repeatedly told about Mungiki and he ignored. It took Michuki’s guts to keep Mungiki quiet for some months last year.
Kibaki is the sort of nice guy who wants to wish bad news away – unfortunately the bad news caught up with him.
I understand Moi was the same until the infamous coup of 1982. Let us hope Kibaki does not change into a monster.
Question:
Do you think Raila would ignore intelligence reports???
josh:
If you are correct, then Kibaki is incompetent. The first priority of any president is to ensure the security of the citizens of the country he leads.
So, Michael Gichangi is doing his job and kibaki is the one who is asleep.
AT kikuyu’s
kikuyu’s will never ever keep kenyans safe because violence and stealing is encouraged by kyuk parents. majority of kenya security forces are controlled by corrupt, violent kyuk murderers, so dont expect anything to change any time soon.. the only place tha is safe in kenya is kalejin inhabited land…unless of course u are a kyuk
@Mzeiya: Good points. Mungiki’s terror-tactics and modus operandi should be condemned by all right-thinking Kenyans…but like many poor youth in Kenya today, they have some genuine grievances that need to be addressed, or else we’ll be dealing with warlords and militias (from different communities) soon
.
@pokot: These type of tribal rants are getting tiring – especially for some of us who dont come from any of the “big” tribes and learnt to accomodate others early… Dude/dudess, the rest of Kenya has moved on – what are you still waiting for?
The nation paper got an article on intelgence (NSIS)..What they knew before and after elections :

Just see if it sheds any light
thanks
Guys
Even thou’ am a bit behind, I wish to say this, It’s a wrap for Kibaki. Lets move on from this guy, he will not factor much in the future. I say we deal with mungikii from a family perspective, Raila Odinga will be very happy to see the Kiuks divided and split by this monster to ensure that we get destroyed from within both economically and politically.
Raila would love this issue to start eating away the kikuyu’s like it did during the seven day protest, where almost all kikuyu businesses where shutdown; now imagine if this goes on and off for about 10yrs. we would be going down close to becoming Luo Nyanza; we could also be starving since there could be an internal civil war(Kikuyu).
So, we either bring our boys home or we all join Mungikii, we cannot afford to be split. This way we can face outward and defend ourselves from the next ODM wholesale massacre.
Make your decision, Your Father, Mother, brother, Sister or Wife might already be in and you never know who is or is not.
That’s the Mungikii way, Our way
