What Businesses Would you Start in Kenya If…..

You had the money, the time, or the whatever…..

Many, many people have many, many, ideas, but little time or no money with which to execute those idea’s. However, that doesn’t and shouldn’t stop us from talking about them (since everything does begin with a simple idea).

So, having said that, what business ideas’ have you thought about doing in Kenya and if you were brave enough to have actually done them, did they succeed or fail and if they failed, I’d like to know why. However, if they succeeded, I’d also like to know what the key was (was it your ability to sell, was it luck, was it being in the right place at the right time?)

I’ll begin by posting some of the idea’s I’ve heard/and/or thought about:

  • A high-end martini bar (would this work?)
  • A social networking site (I know for sure this will not work {yet}; too few Kenyans/Africans are connected to the web.
  • A brokerage company that is totally on-line based (similar to an E*trade or Ameritrade; is this coming?)
  • A grocery store that sells items exclusively for diabetics (it’s hard to find sugar-free foods in Kenya & there is a growing diabetic population)
  • Consulting? yes?/ no? (How would you get clients though? tough, tough).
  • Outsourcing (is everyone waiting for that cable line?)

What do you think?

I am a creative person. I like to make stuff like cards as a hobby. I also am a good writer and can write anything from articles to novels. Currently Im working on a novel that I would love to publish once its through.
A year ago my mother borrowed a loan from the bank of about 500,000ksh so as to cater for my sister and I’s needs as my father went bankrupt. Recently the bank caught up with her and is threatening to auction our stuff if she doesn’t pay up. Right now we’re living in fear because we don’t know when our time will be up. My mother has a small bar of her own but it is not making enough money to save us. My father has reached the retirement age and cannot get re-hired. I am willing to do whatever it takes to save my family from poverty.
I just want someone out there to read this…any investor willing to help me help my family. Making cards and writing are the only things I can do as of now and I know it can be a huge help so if there’s anyone out there willing to help, I can never thank you enough.
My email address is joannejojo0868@gmail.com if you wish to inquire further.

Hi guys, my name is Francis, I’ve been working on my project for the past 8 months, where am merging travel with finance, its basically a platform that supports the growing domestic and international tourism sector primarily targeting the local market.

This platform drastically increases the spending power of the locals on tour products and brings much convenience to international visitors.

I already have in place a strategy on how to launch and run the business at its start-up phase from both admin to market outreach

I’ve spent my savings on research, I am very young so am flat out on capital.I have done most of the research with a business plan already in place.

I am looking for serious investors or a long-term partner who’s willing to invest heavily in the business. The idea needs start-up capital of not less than 25,000$ to get started. Prefer someone who’s well connected in the business world.

All nationalities can contact me from whichever country interested in investing in Kenya

Opportunity is looking good, there’s room for growth and development as the tourism sector is expected to grow rapidly in the next few years.

    Serious people only.

looking forward to hearing from you

You do need to take care when handling the raw meat

Hi, am Francis Kenyan National,Love this blog,I am an aspiring entrepreneur wanting to venture into the toursim industry,The general idea of my business is starting a company solely driven into boosting local tourism by introducing cheaper and affordable rates for safaris ,other than the ones published by companies already in operation in the country.Wild safaris and safari events tends to be an expensive affair both in the country and regionally.I intend to solve this problem by intorducing affordability into the market. The company will be engaged in serving both local and foreign visitors,I aspire to grow this company regionaly beyond our borders later in the future.Tourism and safaris can be a great tool into building national cohesion among different communities in the region as it would open up the most neglected and inaccessible regions to the world this being one of my goals.
This inludes alot of research, our target market being students regionally and worldwide..middle come earners, business institutes, families and hooneymooners.
Travel banking will be an additional support system to our clients, which includes savings, travel credit and other prospects put into consideration.

My idea is on paper, a written business plan and on working plan on how to turn it into a business.

Minimum competition in this market as most safari companies havent ventured into tapping local tourism, estimating to be quit a booming and profitable business with increasing profits yearly

Alot of factors have been considered when planning.

Seeking for a strong partner, preferrs one with interest in tourism industry and social development.Partner should be creative ,goal oriented interested in seeing the success of the company, and also alot of financial support will be needed, prefered ,an investor or anyone with strong capital.

I will be putting in a start capital of 800,000,
This business will be in progress by end next year with or without a partner.

All nationals are invited to be my partners.
Thankyou….lookimg forward to hearing fom you.

    Hello serious investor,

We are urgently in need of a strategic partner.

Oba Kunta African Exports is a Kenya-based private company that is engaged in production, processing, marketing and exporting of sisal products. Our activities are in Homa Bay and Migori counties of Kenya. By leveraging a well thought out business plan executed by a skilled management team, Oba Kunta African Exports will generate over $850,000 in year three sales.

We have been in operation for over a year and have put in 7million KShs. The company is seeking approx. KShs. 10,000 in both short-term and long-term loans to finance the purchase of Oba Kunta African Exports’ new farm, upgrade the facilities, finance its growth and full-time production, cover start-up expenses and first year losses. It is estimated that the company will begin to make a profit in Year 2 of operations. So far Oba Kunta African Exports has invested $71,882 in loans, and from director’s personal savings. Sales forecasts conservatively indicate that $190,000 revenue will be generated in year two, rising to $216,000 the following year. The company does not expect to have any cash flow problems during the first four years of operations.

We absolutely love your blog and find almost all of your post’s to be precisely what I’m looking for. can you offer guest writers to write content available for you? I wouldn’t mind creating a post or elaborating
on a lot of the subjects you write with regards to here.

    Again, awesome web log!
My spouse and I stumbled over here from a different website
and thought I should check things out. I like what I see so i am just
following you. Look forward to finding out about your web
    page for a second time.
I really like what you guys are usually up too.
This kind of clever work and exposure! Keep up the excellent works guys I’ve incorporated you guys to our blogroll.
Howdy I am so happy I found your weblog, I really found you by accident, while I was looking on Yahoo for something else, Anyways I am here now and would just like to say thanks a lot for a incredible post and a all round thrilling blog (I also love the theme/design), I don’t have time to go through it all at the minute but I have bookmarked it and also added in your RSS feeds, so when I have time I will be back to read much more, Please do keep up the superb job.
Appreciating the time and effort you put into your website and in depth information you provide. It’s awesome to come across
a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same out of date rehashed material. Excellent read! I’ve bookmarked your site and
I’m adding your RSS feeds to my Google account.
Hi! I’ve been following your website for some time now and finally got the bravery to go ahead
and give you a shout out from Dallas Texas! Just wanted to mention keep up the
    good job!
I’m really enjoying the theme/design of your site. Do you ever run into any internet browser compatibility problems? A small number of my blog visitors have complained about my website not working correctly in Explorer but looks great in Chrome. Do you have any solutions to help fix this problem?
I’m curious to find out what blog platform you’re utilizing? I’m
experiencing some minor security issues with my latest website and I’d like to find something more safe. Do you have any suggestions?
Hmm it looks like your blog ate my first comment (it was extremely long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up
what I wrote and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog. I as well am an aspiring blog blogger but I’m still new to everything.
Do you have any tips and hints for inexperienced blog writers?
    I’d genuinely appreciate it.
Woah! I’m really enjoying the template/theme of this site.

It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s
hard to get that “perfect balance” between user friendliness and visual appeal.

I must say you’ve done a awesome job with this. In addition, the blog loads super quick for me on Internet explorer. Exceptional Blog!
Do you mind if I quote a couple of your posts as long as I provide credit and sources back to your weblog? My website is in the very same niche as yours and my visitors would definitely benefit from some of the information you provide here. Please let me know if this alright with you. Appreciate it!
Hi there would you mind letting me know which web host you’re
using? I’ve loaded your blog in 3 completely different web browsers and I must say this blog loads a lot faster then most. Can you suggest a good internet hosting provider at a reasonable price? Many thanks, I appreciate it!
Awesome blog you have here but I was wondering if you knew of any message boards that cover the same topics discussed here? I’d really love
to be a part of online community where I can
get suggestions from other knowledgeable people that share the same interest.
If you have any recommendations, please let me know. Appreciate it!

Greetings! This is my first comment here so I just wanted to give a quick shout out and tell you I really enjoy reading your articles.
Can you suggest any other blogs/websites/forums that deal with the same topics?
    Thanks a ton!
Do you have a spam issue on this website; I
also am a blogger, and I was curious about
your situation; many of us have created some nice procedures and we are looking to swap solutions with others, please shoot me an email if interested.

Please let me know if you’re looking for a article writer for your blog. You have some really great posts and I think I would be a good asset. If you ever want to take some of the load off, I’d love to write some material for your
blog in exchange for a link back to mine. Please send
me an email if interested. Cheers!
Have you ever considered about adding a little bit more than just your articles?
I mean, what you say is important and everything. But just imagine if you added some great pictures or videos to
give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with images and clips, this site could definitely be one of the greatest in its niche.
    Excellent blog!
Fascinating blog! Is your theme custom made or did you download it from somewhere?
A design like yours with a few simple tweeks would really make
my blog shine. Please let me know where you
    got your design. Kudos
Hey would you mind sharing which blog platform you’re working with? I’m planning to start my own blog in the near future but I’m having a difficult time selecting between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something unique.
P.S Apologies for being off-topic but I had to ask!

Hi there just wanted to give you a quick heads
up. The words in your post seem to be running off the
screen in Safari. I’m not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with web browser compatibility but I thought I’d
post to let you know. The style and design look great though!
Hope you get the issue resolved soon. Kudos
With havin so much content do you ever run into any issues of plagorism or copyright infringement?
My site has a lot of exclusive content I’ve either created myself or outsourced but it appears a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my permission. Do you know any methods to help reduce content from being ripped off? I’d truly appreciate it.

Have you ever considered creating an e-book or guest authoring on other websites?
I have a blog based upon on the same topics you discuss and
would really like to have you share some stories/information.
I know my readers would appreciate your work. If you are even remotely interested,
feel free to shoot me an e-mail.
Howdy! Someone in my Facebook group shared this site with us so
I came to check it out. I’m definitely loving the information. I’m bookmarking and
will be tweeting this to my followers! Terrific blog and excellent
    design and style.
Excellent blog! Do you have any tips and hints for aspiring writers?

I’m planning to start my own blog soon but I’m a little lost on everything.
Would you suggest starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid
option? There are so many choices out there that I’m completely overwhelmed .. Any recommendations? Thank you!
My coder is trying to persuade me to move to .net from PHP. I have always disliked the idea because of the expenses. But he’s tryiong none the less.

I’ve been using Movable-type on various websites for about a year and am worried about switching to another platform. I have heard great things about blogengine.net. Is there a way I can import all my wordpress content into it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Does your website have a contact page? I’m having trouble locating it but, I’d like to shoot you an e-mail. I’ve got some recommendations for your blog you might be interested in hearing.
Either way, great website and I look forward to seeing it improve over time.

It’s a shame you don’t have a donate button! I’d without a doubt donate to this brilliant blog! I guess for now i’ll settle for book-marking and adding your RSS feed to my Google
account. I look forward to brand new updates and will talk about this blog with my Facebook
    group. Chat soon!
Greetings from Idaho! I’m bored at work so I decided to check out your site on my iphone during lunch break. I love the knowledge you present here and can’t wait to
take a look when I get home. I’m surprised at how quick your blog loaded on my phone .. I’m not even using WIFI,
just 3G .. Anyhow, great blog!
Hey there! I know this is kinda off topic however , I’d figured I’d ask.
Would you be interested in trading links or maybe guest
writing a blog article or vice-versa? My site discusses a lot of the same subjects as yours
and I feel we could greatly benefit from each other.

If you happen to be interested feel free to shoot me an
e-mail. I look forward to hearing from you! Awesome blog by the way!

Currently it sounds like Drupal is the preferred blogging platform out there right now.
(from what I’ve read) Is that what you are using on your blog?
Fantastic post but I was wondering if you could write a litte more on this subject? I’d be very thankful if you could
elaborate a little bit further. Appreciate it!
Hey! I know this is kind of off topic but I was wondering if you knew where I could find a captcha plugin for
my comment form? I’m using the same blog platform as yours and I’m having
trouble finding one? Thanks a lot!
When I initially commented I clicked the “Notify me when new comments are added” checkbox
and now each time a comment is added I get several e-mails with the same comment.
Is there any way you can remove people from that service?
    Thanks a lot!
Hello! This is my first visit to your blog! We are a group of volunteers and starting a new initiative in
a community in the same niche. Your blog provided us beneficial information to work on.
You have done a outstanding job!
Hi there! I know this is kind of off topic but I was wondering which blog platform
are you using for this site? I’m getting fed up of WordPress because I’ve had
issues with hackers and I’m looking at alternatives for another platform. I would be fantastic if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.
Howdy! This post could not be written any better! Reading this post reminds me of my previous room mate! He always kept chatting about this. I will forward this write-up to him. Pretty sure he will have a good read. Many thanks for sharing!
Write more, thats all I have to say. Literally, it seems as though you relied on the video to make your point. You obviously know what youre talking about, why throw away your intelligence on just posting videos to your weblog when you could be giving us something informative to read?
Today, I went to the beach with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off topic but I had to tell someone!
The other day, while I was at work, my sister stole my iphone and tested to see if it can survive a thirty foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation. My iPad is now broken and she has 83 views. I know this is completely off topic but I had to share it with someone!
I was curious if you ever thought of changing the structure of your website? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or 2 pictures. Maybe you could space it out better?
Hi there, i read your blog from time to time and i own a similar one and i was just wondering if you get a lot of spam responses? If so how do you protect against it, any plugin or anything you can recommend? I get so much lately it’s driving me mad so any support is very much appreciated.

This design is steller! You definitely know how to keep
a reader entertained. Between your wit and your videos, I
was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost.
..HaHa!) Fantastic job. I really loved what you had
to say, and more than that, how you presented it.
    Too cool!
I’m truly enjoying the design and layout of your blog. It’s a very easy on the eyes which makes it much more pleasant for me to come here and visit more often.

Did you hire out a designer to create your
    theme? Exceptional work!
Hi! I could have sworn I’ve been to this website before but after reading through some of the post I realized it’s new to me.
Nonetheless, I’m definitely delighted I found it and I’ll be book-marking and checking back often!

Hey there! Would you mind if I share your blog with my twitter group?
There’s a lot of people that I think would really enjoy your content. Please let me know. Many thanks
Hi, I think your blog might be having browser compatibility issues. When I look at your blog site in Safari, it looks fine but when opening in Internet Explorer, it has some overlapping. I just wanted to give you a quick heads up! Other then that, very good blog!
Sweet blog! I found it while browsing on Yahoo News. Do you have any tips on how to get listed in Yahoo News? I’ve been
trying for a while but I never seem to get there! Thank you
Good day! This is kind of off topic but I need some guidance
from an established blog. Is it difficult to set up your own blog?
I’m not very techincal but I can figure things out pretty fast. I’m thinking about setting up my own but
I’m not sure where to start. Do you have any ideas or suggestions? Cheers
Hey there! Quick question that’s entirely off topic. Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly?
My blog looks weird when browsing from my iphone 4. I’m trying to find a theme or plugin that might be able to fix this issue. If you have any suggestions, please share. Thank you!
I’m not that much of a online reader to be honest but your blogs really nice, keep it up! I’ll go ahead and bookmark your site to come back down the road.
    Cheers
I really like your blog.. very nice colors & theme.

Did you make this website yourself or did you hire someone to do it for you?

Plz respond as I’m looking to design my own blog and would like to find out where u got this from. thank you
Incredible! This blog looks exactly like my old one! It’s on a entirely different subject but it has pretty much the same layout and design.
    Excellent choice of colors!
Heya just wanted to give you a quick heads up and
let you know a few of the pictures aren’t loading correctly. I’m
not sure why but I think its a linking issue. I’ve tried it in two different browsers and both show the same results.
Whats up are using WordPress for your site platform? I’m
new to the blog world but I’m trying to get started and create my own. Do you need any coding expertise to make your own blog? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Hey this is kind of of off topic but I was wondering if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML. I’m
starting a blog soon but have no coding skills so I wanted to get
guidance from someone with experience. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any trouble with hackers?
My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up losing a few months of hard work due to no backup.
Do you have any methods to protect against hackers?

Hi! Do you use Twitter? I’d like to follow you if that would be ok. I’m absolutely enjoying your blog and look forward to
    new posts.
Howdy! Do you know if they make any plugins to safeguard against hackers?

I’m kinda paranoid about losing everything I’ve worked hard
    on. Any tips?
Howdy! Do you know if they make any plugins to assist with SEO?
I’m trying to get my blog to rank for some targeted keywords but I’m not seeing very good success.
If you know of any please share. Thank you!

I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own weblog and was wondering what all is required to get setup? I’m assuming having a blog like
yours would cost a pretty penny? I’m not very web savvy so I’m not 100% positive.
Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks
Hmm is anyone else encountering problems with the images
on this blog loading? I’m trying to figure out if its a problem on my end or if it’s the blog.
Any feed-back would be greatly appreciated.
I’m not sure why but this site is loading extremely slow for me. Is anyone else having this issue or is it a issue on my end? I’ll check back
later and see if the problem still exists.
Hey! I’m at work browsing your blog from my new iphone 4! Just wanted to say I love reading through your blog and look forward to all your posts! Keep up the excellent work!
Wow that was unusual. I just wrote an really long comment but after I clicked submit my comment didn’t appear.
Grrrr… well I’m not writing all that over again. Anyhow, just wanted to say great blog!

Not all rosehip oils are the same as there are many different species of rose which
are made up of different amounts of naturally occurring ingredients.
It’s one of the most effective treatments out there, and you will be missing out on something great if you aren’t using it.
It absorbs quickly and can help reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles,
and is particularly effective in soothing sunburn and reversing damage from the sun.

Hi We are looking for people, preferably high net worth individuals, that would like to invest in the Kenya property market and particularly in Nairobi
A lot of opportunity building new city, We offer is a completely passive property investment opportunity. We have property available from as little as £86,000 through to £200 million. We can sort the legal side of the purchase, find the tenants and manage the property on an ongoing basis. In other words we can do everything for the investor so that they have no concerns and can get on with running their day to day affairs.

If you can help, then we have much to discuss as I’m sure that you can see that the earning potential for you on the sale of a £200 million property is huge.

Please let me know if you feel that we could work together and what you would like to see as the next step. Please reply to muchastone@gmail.com +254725330299

I’m a Kenyan entrepreneur living in India.
I would like to give you a chance to partner with me in a jobs/studying abroad business.

I do not believe that anyone can advise you on the business to start. If you are a true entrepreneur , the idea should come from you then you can consult experts on how to implement. The best business to start is where you follow your passion not money.

Me and my partner we co-own the internet service provider (ISP) business. We trade under the company name, Edgemax Solutions & have been in operations a little over a year now.
We both (independently) have extensive experience in the ISP field, having worked for different companies in the past in various capacities, but generally as network/technical support engineers.
As such, we finally decided to join hands & open our own ISP business, for we felt we had the necessary experience & know-how to run such an outfit. Currently, our area/region of concentration is Thika road & its environs, but we have plans to venture out to other regions/estates surrounding Nairobi.
We currently have six fully operational base stations, in the following locations: Zimmerman, Kasarani, Roysambu, Ngumba, safaripark area & Buruburu.
Our targets are small offices & individual home users. We realized that this category of data users have had, for the longest time, little or no choice as far as their internet connectivity requirements are concerned. This is because they have been left at the mercy of the big telcos, whose services they access either through GSM modems or other wireless platforms such as Wimax. One common denominator these providers have is that their data plans are quite expensive to people in the lower income rungs in one way or the other.
We therefore saw an opportunity to step in & offer subsided internet service to these users without compromising on the quality & speed of service provided. & indeed for the short period we have been in existence, our service has been very positively embraced and the few customers we have been able to sign up so far tell us they’re happy & satisfied with our service. In fact, demand is so high that we have been unable to sign up willing & ready customers within & without our service range owing to a number of reasons.
We are very serious & committed to what we have set out to do, despite all odds. We are honest with each other & our operations are very transparent. We are looking for Investor for a 20% stake in our company that is growing faster that we projected,

I hear in most developed countries the medical equipments are replaced after a few years…what about bringing it into Kenya or other such countries..many health facilities do not have any equipment and those which use outdated equipment/technology… most ‘clinics’ have a clinical officer, a funny table and two chairs and an overall only..would be a great social enterprise….X ray machines, dentists tools and such are a hotcake… rockmils@yahoo.com

    Hi,

I am looking for somebody with information about coffee. I have ready market abroad.Yes, I have a thriving market here for bulk E.African coffee, but a very very competitive one. We would thus have to source from the lowest priced suppliers in order to sustain the level of business we’re talking about (6 to 15 container loads per year)

Bearing in mind that we would be targeting 20FT and 40FT container loads, how much would a mixed container load of the following cost:

    Kenya AA 13 Tonnes

    Kenya AB 10 Tonnes

    Bugisu AA 17 Tonnes

    Tanzanian PeaBerry 10 Tonnes

    Ethiopian Yirgacheffe 23 Tonnes

All would be shipped from Mombasa to Oakland, California or to New York. Please provide a quote for both.

    Best of Regards,

In-case you have information about this contact me via 0722558846 or e- mail address lengotobias@gmail.com

I really appreciate this site, thank you!
Kenya is a rapidly developing country and it brings up so many opportunities.
I am saying this as a man from Europe who knows Kenya since 2006 and spent more time here than on the other side.
Would like to mention some of the opportunities and give you a chance to partner with me:
    - You can easily run an enterprise from Kenya which is operating in Europe and earns for you Euros and Dollars…
    - I am looking for a genuine Kenyan partner for putting up an office with a mission to help its Kenyan clients who are seeking for jobs, scholarships, marriage abroad or wish to immigrate to foreign countries, or wish to run a business in Europe or US. I have 20 years in International business plus an International Ngo behind me with 100000 members in 100 countries to make sure that the service of this office is genuine and helpful to all its clients.
    - There are so many foreigners who would gladly invest in Kenya, the same office above is to help these clients from abroad with accurate and up to date information, than to guide them through the steps they need to make in order of putting up a business or investment in Kenya successfully. This can run under the same office or in another one. I a looking for a Kenyan partner who is planing and thinking on a long term business partnership.
If you are interested please write a short introduction about yourself in email and I will get back to you.

This is a good site that gives people of like minded to share and partner. But from my experience I have leaned that true entrepreneurs don’t just share there valuable ideas worth millions with any body any how any where coz the idear will be snatched from you by those who have cash but short of the key entrepreneural elemet.

Starting a business is a leap of faith even in the best of circumstances. As a small business moves through the various stages of its life cycle, it requires different support programs that are suited to its specific needs at that time.

This is a great site. I just landed on it this morning by mistake and have read all the content. brilliant. People need to share. However, I have two points to make.

Do not just go into a business because you have the money, you will lose it all. Choose a business that resonates/ goes with the kind of person you are, your talents and passions. that means you need to know yourself a bit more than usual.

Secondly, when you start a business you need to put it out there on the internet but might not know how.

Now for both the above points, we do consultations for both issues because we believe in the personal success of a many Kenyans as possible.

    July 10, 2012 at 1:02 pm

My name is Stan Winston. I am with a company called Ciergis Business Solutions, and a Global Domains International Independent Affiliate. I work with small business owners and entrepreneurs to help them launch an Internet presence for their business(es).

You may have an email address with Google (Gmail), MSN (Hotmail), Yahoo, or some other 3rd party service provider. My company provides Internet domain name registration services. You can create an online brand for yourself by registering a domain name with my service for as little as $10 PER MONTH. This includes your domain name, up to 10 email addresses (POP/IMAP enabled), and space to create a website. There is also a referral opportunity that will allow you to generate commissions on sales referred to your own affiliate website if you would like to create another income stream for yourself.

Let’s face it, how many other opportunities expressed on here:

    1. Cost as much as a fast food combo-meal,
    2. Can provide a 10% (or more) return on domain investment per month + bonus options,
    3. Can benefit your professional brand and identity,
    4. Will exist as long as the Internet exists,
    5. And is free to try before you are charged anything at all?

As of this date, I have launched 5 such businesses in Africa, 2 in Nigeria and 1 in Kenya…with many more to soon follow. I am currently looking to forge new partnerships anywhere in the world that has Internet access.

If you would like to know more, go to http://www.ciergis.net to contact me for more information and a to get started with you FREE 7-day trial. Thank you for your consideration. You owe it to yourself to view my website for more detail.

    Dare to Dream!

If you have dreamed of getting extra cash in this harsh economic environment, then let me help you. You will see the rewards and you can also help your family members and friends to also get into this business. It is a simple business that does not involve selling products and it is centred on advertising.

You will not do the advertising as this is part of what the business is all about. Anyone can learn this as it is very easy and it will not take more that 10 minutes of your time.

If you are interested then the investment starts from ksh 20,000 upto 330,000 this depends on how comfortable you are and much you are looking to invest. If you have money that is lying around and it is not earning you any interest, I urge you to get intouch with me.

If you are short of which business you want to get into then I will help you invest in this business and when you are ready to begin what your heart desires then, you are free to invest elsewhere.

As a consultant, I may be able to help manage your account as it grows while you learn the business. You don’t need to quit your job immediately, but for a fee we could come to an arrangement on how I can help your investment to grow.

Email me and I can can help you start a business that will change your life for the better. biwise4@gmail.com

There’ s no science to making money. Because there’s alot of factors that come into play before one strikes it rich.If you stay true to your calling and add value plus hardwork, you may get it. You just have to find your passion, think of how you can make money out of it, find a problem that sorrounds your passion and offer solution, product or service. Do your homework, Draw up a business plan, network and launch when it feels right. Though don’t wait for too long,The rest is history. Enjoy the ride.

I don’t know if any of the following business ideas will be of any help but i thought them up.

-super highway bridges advertising: the thika superhighway has about 14 bridges all of which have ample space and strategic faces for billboards. you could approach KENHA to provide you with a concession for advertising on them and establish an advertising agency for corporate clients. think about it. safaricom alone spends billions in a year on advertising and they would like some presence on the busiest highway in eastern and central africa.

-religious skiza:am suprised no one has taken this to safaricom. instead of listening to music when somebody calls you, why dont they listen to a recording of your favourite bible verse, koran verse, hindi verse, joel osteen quotes or a local preacher. our musicians recieve payment from safaricom on their music used as skiza tones, so can you. this is something religious types would pay money for.

NSE charts and information website: provide NSE charts information by various time frames e.g minute, hour, daily, weekly, month, yearly, free of charge. but how do you make money? advertising. get enough visitors and banks, stock brokerage firms will be tripping over themselves to advertising on your website

fortified mineral water: I know we have very many brands of mineral water, but they are all selling the same thing. differentiate yourself by fortifying it with water soluble vitamins and use this as your marketing edge.

lift advertising: how many people use lifts in a day? countless! what do people do in lifts? stare at walls while keeping silent so how about you start an advertising agency that specialises in lift advertising. you can use miniature bill boards or small lcd screens

hangover remedy: alot of kenyans suffer from hangovers on saturdays and sundays. come up with a liquid remedy for this and sell it in bars and supermarkets.somebody wil buy it. its not that diffucult to come up with one. just google ‘hangover remedy’.

finger print car security: instead of an ordinary cut out in vehicles which can be compromised combine it with a fingerprint reader to improve the owners security. it cannot be started without finger print identification.

vegetable juices: with this obsession by kenyan on health (going to quack herbal doctors etc)….you can capitalise on it by packing vegetable juices for commercial purposes e.g. carrot juice, cabbage juice, klae juice or a combintion thereof. however you may have to use artificial flavouring for some to be palatable.

these are just a few of the ideas, i do have others. if you find them viable contact me for more information and ideas on denkam07@yahoo.com

I have come up with a solution to all in agri-business. I will help u get The seedlings..am having a propagating seeds business. This is for Disease-free tomatoes, capsicums e.t.c. I have realised many farmers are loosing alot of money by getting substandard and disease infested seeds therefore realizing low outputs and for a short time..the model is u book the seeds by paying a small fee of the total amount(so u can feel committed to collect ur seedlings at the end of propagation) my seedlings sell for kshs 15 each then we amicably discuss on delivery. My propagation unit is in thika..

This is great. I believe guys can share ideas and move forward. Some of these things we do not learn from business schools. I encourage people to share ideas.

I am in real estate and any with troubled question can always ask me regarding starting a small real estate firm. Another business idea would be any food business. People would always eat, even if inflation rate is at 21%.
    Thanks.

This is really impressive. Fresh comments coming in even 3 years after the original post.
That’s why they say Kenya’s biggest export is Kenyans. Our manpower and creativity is amazing.

In response to what kind of business would be good business, my comments below:

A high-end martini bar (would this work?)

Yes it would: see mercury and wine bar. Kenya has no lack of rich or wonna be rich show offs.. ;-)

A social networking site (I know for sure this will not work {yet}; too few Kenyans/Africans are connected to the web.

Yes may work. see http://walalahoi.ning.com/ or techmtaa.com news sites with a social aspect

A grocery store that sells items exclusively for diabetics (it’s hard to find sugar-free foods in Kenya & there is a growing diabetic population)

Thought of these. and it may be the next thing.. How about all the herbal clinics all over the place????

Starting a travel Agency in Kigali

This is easy. Join http://www.goingsafari.com and buy your cheap flight tickets and book your hotel room direct. bare minimum service fees and as a travel agent, you get a back office to manage your commissions…

    Hoteling Business or tourism

I’m interested in this. all hotels and furnished apartments recorded a 100% occupancy this December. ask http://www.natakanyumba.com .. they received 100s of furnished apartments inquiries.

    cheers

about 40% of the stalls in the cbd area of Nairobi have mobile phones and accessories as the stocks for sale. Are these businesses doing ok ? my research indicates rent for these stalls range from 10k to 40k depending on location and sometimes goodwill is required before getting a stall.

Is selling of mobile and accessories a good business to go into ?

@ Mohamed – I think yours is a brilliant idea; the field of alternative energy and sustainable housing is only burgeoning in Kenya. Serious investment of capital — both human and financial — will certainly yield considerable dividends in the future. In addition, you will may receive support from the international community that is working to sensitize people to mitigate global climate changes. I have a couple of questions/suggestions:
    1) What kind of biomass are you using for your biofuels? Sugarcane, maize, wheat, their by-products?
    2) Have you considered energy storage? Solar energy for example can be readily tapped, however, its storage is not yet optimized.
    3) How about building a local network for cooking gas distribution? Something like an underground pipeline that feeds gas cookers in people’s homes automatically instead of the usual gas jars that are refilled at petrol stations? I am thinking this would easier to do on a local scale and certainly easier to sell in prime (and compact) estates such as Runda.

    Just my 2 cents!

What about fitness clubs? I’ve always wondered about the state and accessibility to gyms and group fitness classes (spinning, yoga, pilates, zumba, etc) in Kenyan major cities. I am thinking something along the lines of Fitness First Health Clubs that you see in DC and its neighboring MD and VA suburbs. I know there are gyms at the Hiltons and other such places, but at over ksh 500/hr, they not affordable to the masses. Besides, with the increasing risk of diet-related health conditions — from diabetes to hypertension — the need for health education and fitness programs tailored to the needs of Kenyans will only continue to grow. Any thoughts?

I’m hoping to get the right answers here.
I’m planning on raising Daily Cows in Central kenya but owing to the Weather crisis i’m getting a little bit hesitant.
I admire farming n grew up on a farm but the city life got me twisted and now i believe it’s the right time for me to venture back into the roots.
Any ideas and how to set up this kind of venture would greatly help hoping for a soon reply thanking all.

You have to supply what kenyans really need. The bigest needs for kenyans fall under.

    security
    food
    transport
    health
    education

Things like clothes, mitumba has coverd that. Uganda has banned paperpacks. Kenya is next. What have you thought about covering the carrying bags vaccum thats gonna come?

Most of u here are novices in business. I can tell from your business dreams. To succeed in busines you have to supply a demand. I could tell you a money guarantee business in a blink. I have no doubt i will make money in kenya when i go back.let me tell you one .am assuming its not even started in kenya coz its a longtime since i was in kenya. it falls under security.

I had once thought of starting a full board funeral service where all you have to do is register with us when you have a dead bodie we look for space for you at a burial ground of your choice pay for it get transport for all your people and then pay us when the work is through.
it will really help with the hustle for preparing funerals the plan and all.
and if you prefer burying your dead body at your rural home we get people to come do all the dog work needed but at a cost depending on your status.
unfortunately capital is the issue plus starting it out anyone out there to help?

I m not sure of tyhe legality of Porn in kenya. However, i think there are other businesses to start than porn and gents clubs. Cant we brainstorm on more ideas before we tart with the pros and cons of the businesses. I think if people would form companies and contribute money(in the form of shares), with probably friends, what are basically called investment clubs, say with 20 friends, contributing minimum 20k monthly, thats 400k in a month. they would have the kind of financial muscle to handle big deals and thats where money is. Theres a lot of compe on small ventures requiring say less than 500k. The ventures they can engage in include buying large properties and developing them either with their own money or being financed partially by banks say equity. If say you buyland at Runda ay for 2M, develop a high class mansion costing 6m abnd sell it for anything above 15M, the risk is less and if the quality is gud could fetch rent of 100k. But only invest in high class cosmopolitan areas. No mugiki or taliban). But please dont bring tribal/politics in this topic. Im tired and sick. The second place where there will be money is warehousing. few months after harvest, people start buying back what they sold. They pay you a lot for the same things they sold to you, or transport the same to dry areas like kisumu, ukambani, isiolo etc.and the margins and thedemand is usually high. As at now, furnished cheap houses are the in thing, with all the violence, and migration, people need some place to rest with their families as they think of settling elsewhere or as calm returns. Some can afford reasonable charges. It all comes down to whether you have some cash to start yourself off, if not , team up. Lets not be like our leaders who tell us were poor but dont really tell us what to de to chango our tomorrow.

Debt collection agency, debt factoring agency, debt securitisation. With all the laons being shelled out by banks, some are bound to go bad. Why not help them collect for a fee? Or even take the loans off them and sell them to some of the cash-rich private equity firms?

@ Kinoo and ME – every time I have a discussion w/ my “well endowed” galfriends or family members they are always complaining about finding bras that fit right so I have always thought that there’s a niche mkt there. Ebu please tell me more about some of these lingerie shops in NBI (e.g. location, prices, etc). I guess I am thinking along the lines of a Njiris or Deacons type of shop for lingerie w/ an emphasis on good quality bras for bigger busts:-)
I am not thinking about concentrating on racy (wonder like bras) but more about everyday/comfy ones.

@ KE – I thought you said that coming up w/ bus. ideas was partly about dreaming (imagining the impossible) – so, we can always dream (and maybe just one day), one of us can come up w/ a plan that will develop NE Province.

  434. Liz
    September 4, 2007 at 2:28 pm

Here are some of my thoughts

What about investing in the tourism segment. For example building luxury African lodges that rival the ones in SA and charging exorbitant high prices per night. A majority of the accomodation facilities that are labeled 5 star in Kenya when compared to other 5 star facilities in SA leave a lot TOO MUCH to be desired.

Alternative energy is the fashionable talk this days. I think there is business opportunity in this segment. Watched a documentary recently in which a farmer in Germany uses his land to set up solar panels aka solar panel farming and sells the energy back to electric utility plants in Germany.

Another idea utility wood poles for electricity, telegraph, telephone etc are in demand. There is scarce supply in east Africa currently. Last i heard Kenya was planning to purchase poles from Chile or some other country in south America. I am still not sure about the viability of such a venture because steel poles are said to be much better in terms of cost, maintainance and disposal.

Anyway just throwing my thoughts out there.

As for North Eastern las vegas, well the gaming industry is a growing economic activity in some parts of Africa esp SA. ( a majority of the gaming activities within the African continent are located in SA and has been very lucrative venture for some) I think the key issue that needs to be addressed in North Eastern Kenya is security. The Kenyan government is yet to commit the time and effort to aggressively address some of the security challenges in this region. With security issues addressed i believe North Eastern and the dry northern parts of Kenya have enormous potential …just need innovative ideas and exceptional execution of this ideas.

  436. ciiku

Forgive the typos/incorrect grammar in my previous response.

Here’s a business idea for Kenya:
A lingerie shop (along the lines of Victoria Secrets). There seems to be a need for a shop that sells good quality bras (esp. for bigger busted women) at reasonable prices. Target mkt here would be lower to upper middle-class women. The Kenyan govt. recently imposed a ban on second hand/mitumba bras and underwear so…
@ KE – I know this isn’t for you since you are not an “inventory” kinda person, but its a business idea all the same:-)

  437. ciiku
    September 4, 2007 at 10:51 am

LOL @ Kinoo and the Gentleman’s Club. From what I have heard, there are a few “underground” ones. The est. a legit one, one has to get the law(s) against them changed first. Also, you bring up an interesting point about how to make N.E. province a Las Vegas of sorts. A lot of challenges w/ that one! For e.g., aren’t most N.E. residents Muslim? Meaning that est. casinos, legalizing prostitution, strip clubs, etc would be next to impossible coz the religious and cultural factors. However, I am sure there are ways to turn N.E. from a poverty striken province into a success story!

KE – I spoke w/ our mutual pal in Kenya and she told me about a friend of her’s who recently opened up a Kenchic on Jogoo Rd. Now there are about 101 Kenchics in Nairobi, but there were none on Jogoo Road yet there’s alot of traffic in that area (Eastlands). In a few months, the joint is doing extremely well and they are now toying w/ the idea of opening it 24hrs!!!

  438. Kinoo
    September 4, 2007 at 9:52 am

One of my favorite places to visit is Las Vegas. How they converted a desert into a money machine. I always wondered how the same principle would apply to North Eastern providence. If the Turwell Gorge was a success, that would be the hoover dam of the N.E and with a strong stream of money welding Arabs, you have a real gem where no one has use for now.

    What do you all think?

  439. kenyanentrepreneur
    September 4, 2007 at 9:09 am

    CT:
You remind me of a discussion I had with a friend of mine this weekend. Whenever I came up with an idea, she kept saying I’d never make money with it (maybe she’s right. I don’t know)

However, I think at many points, entrepreneurship is about dreaming. You have to foolishly envision and foolishly believe that you will make it(otherwise, why bother trying?). Pragmatism is good, but I think in the beginning, you do have to be a kind of dreamer.

It sounds like you tried something in kenya and it failed and you are still kind of bitter (the kikuyu’s did not conspire against you…) – weren’t you the one telling me to move on from my failure when I complained about it on this blog?

I do think that starting a business in America has it’s own unique challenges.  The main one being the brutal competition (In America, you will be competing against the best in the world) — but if you do make it (look at the Indians) you will be the best in the world, not just the best in your country.

  440. ME
    September 4, 2007 at 8:11 am

    Coldtusker….

You said…..”I am (trying) competing against US (or UK/India/Singapore) providers who have far superior facilities.”

You may or may never be able to have better/superior facilities than some of these developed nations. As i said, use what you have or change your business model. Move with the cheese!!!!

You said…”Labour is ONE aspect of the picture. I might win on labour costs BUT not if I can’t deliver the results.”

You are correct. Companies are begining to insource because they are realizing that cheap labor does not necessarily produce quality.
Those Softlaw/GEC boys had a transcribing service which has since died simply because they could not meet US Standards.

Many other US companies have cancelled their outsourcing contracts with Indian firms coz of quality/service issues.

Credit Suisse outsourced its operations to Singapore but has insourced back to North Carolina, US…..coz in the South labor is cheaper than in Wall Street, NYC

You said…”GEC is ok but the hours are a problem for me”
Have you tried talking to them to accomodate your needs?
Even if it means paying a little more?

  441. coldtusker
    September 4, 2007 at 7:36 am

Or maybe as Kinoo said… a Gentlemen’s Club???
(KE, yes, sometimes it does seem that almost every pub is one! I miss the days when going out for a (reasonably priced) drink with friends was just that! No hassles or need for polite… No, Thanks! again and again and again… Or I might just need to change venues!)

No need for internet connections, time differences, fancy communications equipment, marketing outlays in USA, etc… After all the customers are in (very) close contact with the Cust Service Reps…

  442. coldtusker
    September 4, 2007 at 7:26 am

bukusu – Thanks. looks fancy! I will check on pricing & times. It seems they may offer a 24-hr office unlike GEC.

ME: Ahhh… not complaining but pragmatism… coz my money on the line!

I am (trying) competing against US (or UK/India/Singapore) providers who have far superior facilities. Labour is ONE aspect of the picture.

I might win on labour costs BUT not if I can’t deliver the results.

GEC is ok but the hours are a problem for me. 7-10 hr time difference is tough meaning I need to call the US when they are in their offices. GEC closes too early for my use i.e. a conference call at 11am (PST) is 9PM in Kenya.

I though of using Nakumatt UK’s cybercafe but the connections are not always reliable. Also a little too noisy for business use.

I wonder if there is an opportunity in this!!! What provider does your bf use?

You said….”restrictions (legal, cultural or technological) in Kenya prove to be tougher to surmount.”

Why do i think you are complaining too much about Kenya?
Every country has a myriad of challenges so Kenya is not any special.
I bet you’ve been to the US….the business environment may be very different from that in Kenya but businessmen here also have their fair share of challenges.

    Jana i watched a Mc Donald’s documentary on MSNBC….what a classic!!!!!!
Entrepreneurial stories always give me goose bumps :)

Entreprenuers look for opportunity in the midst of challenges.
Kinda like “Is the glass half full or half empty” concept.

    Shared Interent Facilities?
I know there are professional shared office units somewhere in Westlands. I know they provide internet but i dont know if the costs are subsidized.

Heard of Genius Executive Centre, (15th Floor View Park Towers)????

ME: I have no cheese to move… Yes, read it but there are many books that say the same thing…

In any case, the USA or other “western” countries allow for greater freedom whereas restrictions (legal, cultural or technological) in Kenya prove to be tougher to surmount.

    Clients?
Sorry but i dont want to disclose too much info.

    Marketing/Sales?
Yes, he is getting ready with a website and marketing/branding material for some sales calls with the “big dogs”…..simply because you dont need to be a rocket scientist to know that you’re better off with one client who will give you $500,000/yr worth of business than 10 clients each giving you $50,000/yr worth of business. There are pros and cons to both.

ME: I am not saying a call center (I never mentioned that)… but I cant afford $0.50/min calls on roaming. 120,000/- ($1,900) is too steep for me. I can’t make enuff to cover internet+other costs e.g. office, labour & food!

Several outsourcing projects include BPOs, such as Call Centers, Transcribing Svcs,Operations (e.g Credit Suisse with Singapore) etc

My b/f’s outsourcing venture is Software Development. He gets US contracts and his developers/programmers are in Kenya. I’m yet to confirm the details but i believer he has now hired 15 people.

His initial clients were companies in the US he had worked for and the rest are referrals. He does NO marketing or sales.

He uses VOIP to talk to his clients and they call him using his US cell phone number……for which he pays roaming fees. They also conference call, use email as well as chat.

Internet speeds in Kenya are pathetic and thats why he pays approx Ksh 120,000 a month for a faster connection.

Why don’t you use Skype for reduced calling? computer to computer calls are free.

ME: Hats off to ur bf. Calling to/from Kenya is such an expensive affair for me….

While in the UK/USA/Canada, I can call for 2-3 cents per minute between these countries & many others e.g. China, Singapore, Australia, etc.

The cheapest calls in Kenya were using Telkom’s VOIP service BUT the line was not always clear.

I was running a project from Kenya & I gave up between the slow internet & poor quality of international calls. I had to give up on it since the cost of using regular Telkom lines was prohibitive. Safaricom & Celtel were other options for calls but the internet speed & quality were not great!

I do not share my personal info on blogs so I am trying to figure out how I can get in touch with ur bf coz I wud like to explore if I can run the project again from Kenya.

Cost is an issue for me. I would be required to spend 40 hours on the phone each month. And I need to download & upload relatively large files on a regular basis. Finally, I should have the ability to set up conference calls with folks in the USA & UK.

    ME:
Where and how does your boyfriend get clients? this is always the most important question with any business.
    Is he competing with Kencall?

    Mainat:
on line banking is coming. It’s unavoidable. This business of lining up outside a bank for hours is outdated.

    Kinoo:
Isn’t every bar in Kenya basically a “gentleman’s” club?. It just depends on your budget: do you want to be a “gentleman” in Kinoo or at the norfolk?

    Coldtusker…

Those who get into outsourcing NOW can cash in on good $$$ before fibre optic cable is laid as well as and before costs come down (my boyfriend is making a couple of millions ever since he started his Outsourcing Venture in Kenya this year in March 2007).

If you wait for costs to come down and fibre to be laid, the competition will be too intense and the margins very slim. This is not good for the capital infrastructure you will still have to set up.

In entrepreneurshi…. you have to realize that there will NEVER be a perfect time to launch.
    Simply do your homework…make a move….migitate risk….enjoy the ride!

    Leisure centres for the masses?
Online trading would work, but Kenyan banks don’t accept payments online…

Kinoo… LOL… a legal one… I am sure there are plenty of illegal ones!

KE – Forget serious outsourcing until costs come down for QUALITY connections!
