The Funny Men

I am in the process of compiling a list of funny men (public figures who, when they open their mouths, leave me in stitches). So far, the following individuals have made my list:

  • Kalembe Ndile
  • Kamlesh Pattni
  • Otieno Kajwaaaaaaang
  • And now, I’m going to have to add the one and only, Francis Atwoli (this man may actually walk away with the Oscar when I am done compiling my list).

Being funny makes public figures likable despite their buffoonery.  Moi was a buffoon, but because he wasn’t funny, he never became likable.  Lucy Kibaki is a buffoon, but because she always looks pissed off, her buffoonery has never transformed itself into likability.

Listen to Atwoli reminiscing about his “Saturday Night Fever” days (Studio 54 in Bahati here we come!)

Any other likable buffoons who deserve special mention here?

Mwenje (RIP) was a lovable buffoon. I saw him on a TV clip giving a speech on the roof of a car referring to himself as the “Commander” (Kiuk accent). He was in his element on such fora. That was hilarious.

Raila Odinga. Apart from the times when he is promoting murder and mayhem, he is a truly clownish fellow. Listening to him reminds me of Kalembe or that funny guy who was trying to beat him in Lang’ata.
