Vanity Fair & Kenya (Bring on the hateration)

I subscribe to Vanity Fair and I’ve noticed that they very often have articles on Kenya (it seems like every other month). If it’s not a full fledged article, it will usually be a blurb in the travel section.

As I’m flipping through this months magazine, I notice this blurb by a travel writer called Victoria Mather who visited Kenya and stayed at the Giraffe Manor in Langata. Here is what she had to say about her visit and her decision to stay at the Giraffe Manor:

“This is where you must stay in Nairobi. First, because it is mad—an endangered commodity in our world of global homogenization. Second, because the Kenyan capital is crime-ridden, traffic-jammed, and without a decent hotel“.

Um….Did no one tell her about the Norfolk, the Serena or The Grand Regency??? You can read the full article here: Get it right Victoria.

Why I am mentioning this article? because I’ve been reading a lot of news articles about the war in Iraq (Articles largely written by western reporters and I’m beginning to wonder how much stuff they must get wrong) — why? because I’d say that 95% of the time I read an article on Kenya that’s been written by a western reporter and sometimes even whole books, it’s very easy to pick out facts about the country that are completely and utterly wrong.

  1. Its what Im thinking on October 2, 2007 at 8:39 am

I definately do not agree with what this Victoria mama and I know I digress but Its kind of related.

recently I was assisting a friend choose a hotel in Nairobi. Apparently the reviews on top Nairobi hotels was really poor on TripAdvisor.com. Some had really bad comments close to this Victoria’s- unfortunately many people trust these sites I know I do when I travel.

Oh and I came across that Giraffe Hotel advertised on another site and it had wonderful reviews but an average room costs 600 dollars a night almost double what the Norfolk, Grand charge.

I wrote them an email. I hope they don’t do that again. Overflowing? Impoverished? Gimme a break

you are right – a one night stay will cost you $600 dollars. Isn’t that great marketing by the owners of Giraffe Manor? scare your fellow mzungu’s into thinking that the ONLY place they can safely stay in, is YOUR place (for a cool $600 a night) — only the owners of Giraffe Manor can protect you from those savage Africans.

    Shirohs:

I don’t mind them saying that Kenya is impoverished (because that is a true statement) but put it in perspective: when you decide to travel to a third world country, you should expect to see impoverishment! If you don’t want to see that, then go to Paris (just avoid the suburbs).

    checking articles,
as a rule when reading any magazine, i always find it helpful to dig out any story on kenya, and use that as the measure of every other story or issue they’ll have.

and who says that nairobi isn’t poor, traffic jammed and crime infested? i think it just might be!

  5. kenyanentrepreneur on October 5, 2007 at 12:30 pm

    Just what.

Okay – I’ll give you that. It is poor, traffic jammed and crime infested, but are they no decent hotels in Nairobi besides the Giraffe Manor? that’s what got it me. Is the Giraffe Manor better than the Norfolk? or the Serena?
