Why Does Amos Wako Exist?
If there is one civil servant in Kenya whose job is entirely and completely irrelevant, it is that of the Attorney General. Can somebody please tell me what good Amos Wako has ever done for the country? There is no scandal he has ever prevented, there is no important prosecution he has ever carried out and there is absolutely nothing this man has done in the nearly 25 years he has been in that office. I don’t even know why the press is asking him questions about this Grand Larceny scandal. What’s he going to do?
Then of course, his worst crime was letting that Cholomdely guy off the hook and he only relented after there was a public outcry over such a clear miscarriage of justice.
I’ve heard rumours over the years about just how corrupt and evil Wako is. For example, a friend once told me that Wako currently lives in a mansion that he stole from these two children whose parents had passed away. Wako was supposed to act as the guardian of their estate, but he tricked the kids, who were in their late teens at the time and stole everything their parents had left for them! The man whose assets Wako was supposed to secure was a well known Luo lawyer, but his name escapes me at this time. I’m sure someone here will remember this lawyer’s name because his wife also died and his kids were left orphaned.
I have yet another friend who works as an investment banker in New York and he told me that last year Wako was in New York to check up on his “investments”. He has hired a large bank in New York City to manage his money for him and my friend told me that a mzungu he knows, who was working on Wako’s accounts, told him that Wako had about $100 million dollars (yes, dollars) – stashed away in bank accounts in New York.
When you think about it, it’s actually quite plausible for a guy like Wako to have accumulated that much money. He’s been the AG for almost 30 years, so you can imagine all the business people who’ve had to pay him off in order to avoid getting prosecuted for corruption or who’ve just paid him off to get whatever it is they needed done.
I don’t know why the Law Society of Kenya keeps inviting him to these luncheons to give speeches on legal issues. This man is a sinister, evil, first class thief, but he does what his mafia dons tell him to do, all the while accumulating massive amounts of cash, which he wisely stocks away at safe investment banks in New York City. I don’t think a lot of people realize just how rich this man has become.
He is like J Edgar Hoover… he will leave when he wants to. He has too much information on all the dirty politicians…
ain’t that something
but all in all what can anyone do? This guy seems to be above the law.
amazing what people can get away with in kenya (or most other 3rd world countries). Funny how after reading this i actually tried coming up with one positive thing that this guy had done in his tenure and came up with nothing while the list of negatives is almost endless and quite disgusting especially the handling of that delamare (sp) idiot. and to think that he occupies a lifetime post.
I have eternaly hated his continous grin, suspected he was a retard but how wrong i was.
His existance of course is a statement about MOI and KIBAKI
Its ONLY Raila who is disgusted with WAKO in the high echelons
I was really disappointed when the first united NARC govt (pre-referendum) did not get rid of this nincompoop. It also showed me that the NARC govt was not as good intentioned as they had portrayed themselves to be.
He should immediately go. Better still, he should be in prison.
KE: Are you thinking of Aoko Ombaka (sp?)…
It’s incredulous that this man has lasted this long in government. Beyond his sinister and evil demeanor, what does he have (leverage) that has kept him this long? That is a lot of change (assuming he does not have other swiss/cayman/whatever accounts)…Most times I wonder why the West gives additional aid for all the various causes like hunger etc etc…Maybe they should just give up and let public outcry (threat of lynching) by the masses drive the return of all this loot… Yeah, right…must be a movie I was watching the other day…
I think he has security of tenure, therefore he exists.
It’s a shame to hear that
I really respected the guy and admired him on how he has been able to maintain his career for long time.
He must be very swift and lucky if he has never been caught even once
However I pity Kimunya regardless of whether he’s right or wrong I see it to be more of character assassination.
Considering he occupies the most envied position in any cabinet in the world.
Plus he attempted to pass a bill that mp’s should pay taxes
most mp’s secure their seats desperately by even mortgaging their houses to finance campaign
Now when kimunya proposes to burn a hole in their pocket. i don’t think any selfish guy like our mp’s would tolerate such a person.
I think kimunya can make a very good business executive who makes well founded business decisions.
unfortunately corporate principles are not acceptable in the public service.
Parliamentarians withdrew favor from kimunya the moment he stopped serving their selfish interests. An independent / private audit should be conducted in every ministry from time to time and that way the likes of wako will soon be caught.

Yes – that’s a good point. He does have security of tenure, but isn’t he on some sort of contract that has to be renewed? So, once it’s renewed, you can’t fire him for the duration of that contract period, but if you didnt want him in that office, you just wouldn’t renew the contract. Is that how it works or does he have a lifetime appointment?
The AG position should be an electable position like it is in America. That way, if the AG doesn’t perform, the people can vote him out every 5 years and he should also be subject to parliamentary oversight so that if they find he is being corrupt, parliament should be able to impeach him and get him out of there even before his term of office ends.
You have to be able to either fire people or prosecute them because this is the only way to ensure that nobody is above the law (not even the president).
WG:
I’m not sure if it was Aoka Ombaka. I”m still trying to find out, but these orphaned kids were going to college in the states and when their parents died and Wako stole all the money, Moi (believe or not) is the one who stepped in to pay their school fee’s and their rent. Their father had done some legal work for Moi and they knew each other.

I think it is wrong to accuse Kimunya without giving him a chance to defend himself.
There must be a documentary evidence regarding the sale of this hotel. Let it be tabled. If Kimunya has done something wrong let him be fired or prosecuted. That is the way things should be done.
I fear Orengo may still have his activist instincts in him forgetting that he is now a cabinet minister. That is no way to run a govt.
Let all ministers give an account of how they have spent their allocated budgets. Then we will see who is clean!
As for Wako, he is a deadwood that should have gone a long long time ago.
@Mike Ngegwa
Listen to your logic ! You state Kimunya is being persecuted for proposing Taxing mps! Raila ,Ruto ,Orengo and Many others have publicly supported the taxing of mps.
…..There for from your ‘logic” ( All Mps supporting taxation) will be CENSURED by paliarment!!! This is Kenya
Wako is despicable…but no more so than Kibaki, who has been in government for even longer and probably has benefited even more than Wako. And thats not all, Raila is no saint either (remember the molasses plant in Kisumu anyone). All of our “leaders” are tainted. Which is why this whole farce of Raila calling Kimunya corrupt is like the pot calling the kettle black…classic hypocrisy. Seriously, this whole fucking government needs to go, I am so sick of their shit.
